A quick report from the VGC:
The play from the Irish side was over quick with only my husband making it to the second round. Last year's winner was out in the first round too. It was just a massacre this time. Even Team Belgium were out in the second round.

The final two where a Spanish guy (feck off and play in Spain-grrrrr!) and some random dude. The final was a dull Protect stall match, so not worth being there for.

All in all, I feel this year's VGC was poor. Perhaps it was the fact there was more players (Masters didn't even reach the player cap) or perhaps there was only a few Irish over, but it just felt something fun was missing. If next year is played the same, I would consider possibly going to the UK/Irish one but not bother going to any other European one. The cost of travel isn't worth the bad luck of getting knocked out in the first round due to a bad match up...

    ****ing Palkia...

Who was the stupidly powerful sweeper this year?
Hard luck this year, you'll do better next year I'm sure, or in Spain for that matter.

Ah harsh buzz. I hate Protect stalling, it's piss poor gaming. What knocked you out?

639.png, saw a good idea of him and Whimsicott. Whimsicott used Beat Up on Terrakion, dealing tiny damage but triggering Justified for a four times attack rise

I got done in by (don't laugh) Sigilyph. It managed to Ice Beam spam my guys, taking down my Landorus holding Yache Berry with a single Ice Beam, without getting a critical hit :/. That was the clincher, as I was left with a half health and burned Conkelldur that couldn't outspeed the Sigilyph.

Here's the final by the way, I may be possibly hear screaming:

That was well played on the viewing side, but the winner? That was some damn poor gameplay. Protect whoring and legends all the way? That was painful to watch.

Agreed, I still had fun but the atmosphere was nothing like last year. We didn't even bother staying for the final because the place was half dead.

I also got knocked out in the first round. My Trick Room team (Conkeldurr, Audino, Druddigon and Reuniclus) got Imprisoned early on by a Chandelure which also had Trick Room, so the whole thing felt apart. I hear the guy who beat me got into the top 16 though..

My own team would've had a Chandelure doing that. I REALLY hate Trick Room...

My own team was knocked out in the first round also, ironically because I didn't use Trick Room. I used Chandelure and Ferrothorn, my opponent started with Whimsicott and Archops. I decided to use Heat Wave to OHKO Whimsicott on the first turn, except he held on with Focus Sash and used Tailwind.

Then in the second turn, I loose my Chandelure to Archops Rock Slide before I can use Trick Room. The battle is evenly matched for a while after that, I take out my opponents Whimsicott and Archops, He takes out my Jellicent, I don't get off a decent Water Spout as I've taken too much damage before I can use it.

Unfortunately for me it then comes down to my Hydregion and Ferrothorn versus his Scrafty and Chandelure. He Drain Punch Hydregion, who hangs in there with just 13HP. I get Hydregion to use Surf but it's not enough to take out either Pokemon and Hydregion is finished off by it's own Life Orb. Then Chandelure uses Heat Wave on Ferrothorn and it's all over.

I agree that VGC this year wasn't as exciting. I still had a great time. Maybe next year we'll be allowed to use all Pokemon with Dream World abilities which should make it more exciting.

I beat three people, then lost to the Spanish guy who came first. God I hate the Genies. Just didn't like his mannerisms while playing or his actual team itself. If I didnt bring my choiced Haxorus into the battle versus him and brought my Ferrothorn, I might've been able to win. Prankster + Thunder Wave made my Haxorus useless.

Oh well. I had fun. I had a fun first round against some random guy, and then destroyed a Trick Room team with Chandelure - Imprison/Trick Room. Got to the 4th round at least, for my first VGC. Wish I beat the Spanish guy though, just really didn't like him much.

Missed twice in that battle too, but it was with Rock Slide, and he was protecting a good deal too. Should've just played it better I guess. Oh well. :P

My friend Zaraki got knocked out in the first round, my other friend Kaiden got knocked out in round 3, and his brother got knocked out in round 4 as well. He got knocked out by a Hidden Power Tornadus or Thunderus I think? Bit skeptical about that.

I didnt pack any Genies or the Musketeers. If I packed Terrakion or some Ice Move (God damnit I should've learned at Eirtakon.. :P ) I might've done abit better.

Wow wow WOW. Just googled the guy who won, apparently his entire team was cheated and not RN'd for it's IVS. :/ He was discussing it on a forum there. Wonder if there's any way to point him out. :P http://skarmbliss.com/forum/index.php?topic=1315.msg14955#msg14955

I couldn't understand that forum. Elaborate?

Google Translate gets most of it:

    Big Post by him:
Habaks us, we have a colleague who knows a lot about it, has several programs and it was he who hoisted us to Lyon last year, Spain and Hawaii, and we had any kind of problem (izo by Pokesav).

This year is easier than the previous one because as you say, the IVS will not be linked to the PID, then what we do is use the RNG .. do more simple:

We capture the pokemon or eggs in the nursery, once we have the legal pokemon game, our colleague Pokesav edited ... will change the evs and ivs, and apart numbers will adjust some secrets of pokemon manually, then use multiple rare to verify they are correct.

I trust and rely on, like last year ^ ^

Bit of an unfair advantage and that would mean he's using an outside device to modify his pokemon, which is against the rules. :|

They do spot checks throughout the day and once you get through to the finals all carts are checked. If he was using modified Pokemon he surely would have been caught?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 429 ✭✭Linoud

Apparently the system has changed in this Gen for checking or something, I wouldn't know exactly how it works since I only use legit Pokemon. But there is some evidence from himself that he has edited his Pokemon so, maybe something'll happen to his spot in the VGC?

Not really as the official legit checks are terrible (they rejected the event Weavile given out at Worlds the previous year, at last year's competition).

Previously the legit checkers would mostly check if the IVs and the PID matched. IV numbers where set to a certain method of coding (called the PID, I think that stands for Pokemon ID but I'm not sure). Also in Gen 4, the PID also connected the IVs to the nature. Think of it like the link that connects IVs to nature and (I think) ability. If this link was wrong then the Pokémon was not made in game, as the game could only make certain IV combinations with certain natures.

Now in Gen 5, they scraped/are not using the IV/PID combinations in the game making it harder to guarantee that a Pokémon is legit. My guess is that the staff are still using an old version of the legit software and 99% of them haven't a clue what's actually going on.

EDIT: Just crunched numbers on my VGC 2011 Battle. My Landourus's speed at lv50 is (IV 30 in speed and 255 Evs in speed) 167, yet I was outspeed by a Sigilyph with Life Orb that can only have a maximum speed of (max IVs, EVs and speed nature) of 163..... *sniff sniff* external editing

Rome finals if anyone is interested. It's a lot more interesting (if time stalling) than Birmingham

    Did anybody record there battles?

I think players mostly recorded them on the VS Recorder. I deleted my Birmingham one to save my Madrid Round 1 match. It's now on the the wi-fi video database, it's ID 37-40962-62113, I'll record it and post it on Facebook, as it's an EPIC BATTLE OF DERPFISH!! BEST BATTLE EVER!!!

(made it to Round 3 this time - go me)
