Possible root canal or more?

I have what i would guess is an abcess above a heavily filled tooth.

The tooth is not painful but the gum above the tooth is very sore when pressed and has a numb feeling. Having done some research i reckon i have a painless abscess.

I have had it probably for around 4 weeks but it has caused no trouble as is not pain unless i push against the gum or was to get punched!

Anyway i am getting it sorted (going dentist in few days time) as have to go away for summer. Just wonder what it could be and how bad it will be.

Could it be eating away at the bone at this stage? The tooth below the abcess? (where it is numb and very sore to touch) was very heavily filled and i have already got a root canal on the same tooth on the other side which has had no problems. It is the molar just behind the canine.

I had similar problem about a month ago when I was on holidays.
A back molar that had been filled years ago was giving me trouble. I had it seen to away and it required root canal - I now have to get a crown put on the tooth.

The root canal treatment wasn't any sorer than a filling, some numbness afterwards but fine the following day.
