CV joints

    I have a cv joint out of place....been quoted 180 euro to have it replaced, just wondering if thats reasonable? also, is it okay to drive on it for a while until i can save the money???:confused:

    €180 euro isn't out of the way, a CV joint isn't too cheap at RRP from a factors, folks drive thousands of miles with knocking CV joints. Never heard of one out of place as you describe it though, I presume it's been lost in translation a bit so to speak :)

    turns out it wasnt the cv joints at all, but the drivering shaft!!!

    what happened did the mechanic not want to ge this hands greasey? and changed the whole drive shaft.

    apparently it wasnt the cv joints at all! and he ended up having to replace the drivers shaft!

    Splines on the driveshaft were probably worn..

    apart from the cv and the boot theres not a lot that can go wrong with the drive shaft. did you strip the splines, 180 for a new ds fitted was a good deal.

    dont know what splines are?
    my head gasket was gone so got that fixed plus the new driversshaft for £450!

    Usually Both ends of the driveshaft are splined, they slide into the Inner and outer CV joints and are usually held in by circlips. If they wear the splined parts dont engage properly and can either pop out when the car turns or can just spin and not transmit power to the wheels.
    They are a handy enough job. Parts are expensive though.
