Right, so looking to get a laptop and notice some of them now have Intel i3/i5 processors such as Intel® Core™ i3-2310M Dual Core (2.1GHz, Intel Sandy Bridge Architecture, 3MB Cache).

What exactly is the difference in these processors compared to the normal i3/i5? They have a lower GHz so are they slower or what?

No they're faster, just a newer architecture. Whether or not they'd be worth it over a 2010 i3/15 depends on the individual case, although they are cheaper than i anticipated..

So what exactly is the benefit of these new i3/i5's over the standard i3/i5's?

Faster, generate lass heat and consume less power. The new i3s are almost comparable to old i5s and like wise with the 5s and 7s.
