Root Canal Treatment following deep filling

If during drilling a deep filling the pulp is exposed and was pretty much immediately capped what are the chances that root canal treatment will be needed.

The tooth in question after the filling is mildly sensitive to cold drinks but no pain otherwise.

What I am asking is can the pulp repair by itself or could an absess or infection form inside the capped filled tooth?
