Opel Zafira New fuel pump still wont start

Help please have a 2000 2ltr diesel Zafira. Refused to start 3 weeks ago. Told fuel injector pump was the problem. Got one from scrap yard which had to be returned as still would not start. Got another from another yard with matching codes and was looking forward to my car back but no it still won`t start. Mechanic tells me no air in system and he is at a total loss. Next step is to tow it to main dealers but cannot afford what they are most likely going to charge. Engine management light is not continuous when turned over. Any advice please ready to pull the hair out at this stage!!!!

If it is a second hand pump then it will need to be coded in by someone with a suitable scantool or Opel's TechII. The original pump is still coded to the ECU and immobiliser, and that's probably why it won't start.

If you bought a recon pump from Bosch agent, the controller on the pump is supplied in a virgin state and it codes itself automatically to the ECU when you key-on for the first time.

Thanks for reply. getting very mixed messages on recoding from main dealers. Have asked a few this question and all say differently...some yes yes it does need recoding and some say definetly not. Problem is the crew I bought the pump from now tell me they don`t have the chassi number from the engine the pump came off which I would need to get the code for that pump so if it does have to be recoded I`m back to square one AGAIN !!!!

Try asking on the forums on the link below, the same engine was used in the Vectra and so some one might be able to help you there.

If someone can code it without needing the chassis number (and I don't know why they would want this) then ask them to do it for you. Unless you replace the pump again with a recon unit as I explained above then there is no way around this.

Those Bosch VP pumps are utter muck by the way. They are used in Opels and Fords and are horrendously problematic. Personally I wouldn't fit a second hand one because you don't know how long it will last. Recon's can be got for around €500 or so if you know where to look

Just to be clear, the later vectra (Vectra C from 2002 onwards) uses a different pump again to the OP's car. The OP's setup is the same a Vectra B

This pump (vp44 psg5)does not need to be coded to the car/immo unlike the ford version of the same pump. Later zafiras with psg16 pump (has engine ecu on top) do require immo matching.
These take a huge amount of bleeding with a primer bulb to get running after being dry.

Looks like I was wrong (again...:o). I found this article which is worth a read. The older pumps have one single block connector and need no coding. The newer ones have two block connectors and do need coding. Apologies for any confusion caused.

Incidentally, the older pump does have a mini ECU in the top of the pump, and it is this which fails and causes the no start symptoms (and I have personal, bitter, and expensive experience of it too).

Join the club:D, similar experience on customers vectra b when it was still worth something.
I think pretty much any of these similar part no. opel pumps will be adequate to get up and running so even if the part no wasn't correct you should still have diesel delivered.
Has it been code read? with the original fault?

Mine was on an Astra G 1.7TD (low blow). Same Bosch VP pump, same type failure, same dead CAN controller in the pump, same big bill to put right....
