Looking for some advise, have been looking at some second hand cars and so far have come up with the following

    2003 Opel Vectra Club 1.6 Saloon 100k

    2004 Skoda Octavia Ambiente 1.6 100k

Both have passed NCT and are both petrol - any thoughts on either of these cars. I am really looking for reliability and running costs more than anything else.

    Both coming in around €3,500

    Any suggestions on these

You could probably get one about a year older with a lot lower mileage for that price. I'm currently looking at a few BMW 3 series with about 80k miles that are between 99-2003 at about the €4000 mark.

I actually had an 03 BMW 318 last year and got rid of it due to the high maintenance and running costs. Don't get me wrong it I loved the car but it was hammering the wallet - petrol, servicing etc.

I was told the Octavia is very economical and thats really what I'm looking for. Only thing is its a petrol and I was looking more for a diesel. I had a look on parkers.co.uk and it seems to get scored pretty high for reliability.

I'd prefer to go for an older car with lower miles and a full service history. also, the higher the spec the better. It will be easier to sell on when you want to upgrade later.
One example, a y2k skoda octavia 1.6 glx with 59k miles is on sale from a dealer at 2 grand. http://www.carzone.ie/search/Skoda/Octavia/GLX-1.6/201115202042916/advert?channel=CARS
