Ive recently started trying to lose weight by eating a high protein low carb diet with plenty of fresh veg. Im also walking approx 5k 3-4 times a week. In the last 3 weeks ive lost about 3lbs and 2" each off my hips and stomach. Ive got about 5 stone to lose. Although I know it wont happen overnight im interested to know whether im doing enough, or is there anything i can do to improve on the way im eating and exercising. Thanks:)

Somethin goin on if you only lost 3lb in 3 weeks, from the fact of you having to lose 5st i assume you are the same weight as I am. On a high protein diet i lost 30lbs in a month.

The VAST majority of people would not lose 30lbs in one month. That's one pound per day, i.e. a calorie deficit of 3,500 per 24 hours. How is that even possible? It isn't really, is it, unless much of it was water weight.

Between 1 and 2lbs per week is far more realistic a goal.

I thought 3lbs was very little alright, I had been expecting more like 2-3 per wk, 30lbs in a month does sound great but VERY FAST!! I have been doing alot of reading online and I think the problem may be that im actually eating too little!! I didnt really think this was possible????

Eating too little? No. If you want to lose weight faster, do daily cardio and eat slightly less.

However, you don't want to eat too little because your body needs x amount of calories every day to keep it warm, to keep your heart beating and your brain thinking and your skin healthy.

But it's a myth that eating too little causes people to not lose weight. If you eat less, you WILL lose weight, and the less you eat the faster you'll lose it. It's a matter of energy in vs energy out. However, drastic caloric reductions will result in some muscle loss in addition to fat loss, not to mention important vitamin and mineral deficiencies which affect bone and organs.

I reiterate, 30lbs in one month is unrealistic for almost everyone. Aim for 1.5lbs per week. There's no quick fix here. Those 5 stone took a long time to put on, and they'll take a while to work off.

All i can say is don't do anything today you can't see yourself doing in 6 or 12 months.

As in change your whole lifestyle to eat healthy and exercise. If its a walk listening to the radio or a swim or whatever but make it part of your daily life.

As others have said if it comes off too fast it will go back on too easily.

Look at it as a new chapter in your life and not just work for a month and go back to what you did before food and exercise wise.

Here's what you do, go calculate your BMR, add the calories you burn to that figure and consume caloric quantity 20% less than the two combined.

Im not sure i explainerd that as clear as i could so here is an example

Caloric Output = BMR + Calories burned vie exercise

    Caloric intake = Caloric Output - 20%

by eating too little i meant it seemed i should be eating at more regular intervals during the day, to keep my metabolism going i guess.

Im doing a low carb high protein diet too and have lost 10lbs in four weeks, lost 3lbs first week, 4lbs second week, 1lbs third week and 2lbs the fourth week! But i have to say even though i have only lost 10lbs i feel like i have lost way more because all my clothes are getting too big and jeans i havent wore in two years fit me again, so i dont know if its the protein or what but the scales dont match the way my clothes fit! I always went by the scales but now im going by my clothes mostly! So maybe just keep on going and you'll see more results in your clothes rather than the scales.

In my experience when dealing with clients that need to drop that kind of weight i wouldnt even worry about high protein etc - just cut out all the junk first and move your butt around wayyy more.

You could drop at least 3stone in just being more honest with your diet and walking every day for a good 30-60mins. You can work on specifics then but in the initial stages stick to the basics

    What he said.

I've dropped 6 stone since Christmas 2009, and the first 3-4 was done purely by eating better (cutting out the junk, and waaaay back on the spuds/bread/etc) and being just a bit more active (walking vs driving, etc).
1½-3 lbs/week consistent loss, quite easily achieved without great lifestyle drama.

    Hi,

    Sorry for hi-jacking this thread...

A low carb diet was mentioned to me in another thread. I'm just wondering where you got your info on the low carb / high protein diet you are following? Or are you just doing what it says i.e. eating less carbs and more protein.

I'd love to try a similar diet, but am unsure how much I should be eating in general each day, and how much protein etc. If you are using an online resource I'd love if you could send me the link.
    Thanks!

    Hi Flurry,

I think you should try the Primal Diet - which is high protein, high fat, high seeds and nuts, high veg and high fruit. It is called a 'diet' but this isn't meant in the short-term sense of the word. This is a diet for the rest of your life, as should be all sustainable eating plans. You have to abandon the delusion that a diet is a short-term thing. It isn't. Your diet is what you eat for the rest of your life and is critical for lifelong health.

The guide is here and the book is called the Primal Blueprint. It genuinely is one of the best nutritional plans around according to those who really know what they're talking about.

You will have to do research by reading the website thoroughly. You will have to unlearn all the bogus info you were taught about fat being bad, and yes, you'll have to cut out most processed food.

But it is sustainable and enjoyable. WW is not.

And yes, you will need to work out initially how many calories you need. Use this website to help you.

Once you have worked out what you need, try a calorie deficit 500 below your TDEE, which the website above will calculate straightforwardly for you. To work out how many calories are in things, for the first few weeks you will need a small kitchen scales to weigh your food. Once you have weighed it, calculate the calorie numbers for free on www.fitday.com

After a few weeks of doing this, you'll get very good at estimating how much calories are in different foods and you can dispense with the kitchen scales.

Couple all this with regular (i.e. daily to 5 times per week) of 30-minute cardio
    and you will profit.

Sure, it takes more effort initially than going to WW. But you will be much more likely to succeed this way, long-term.

Im not following any actual 'laid out for me' diet, i got the idea that i needed more protein and hardly any carbs from a few articles i read online on the subject. I was always in love with my bread and spuds and stuff like that, and never really a meat lover. This was ok years ago i think, as i used to be really active, but then as work etc took over and got out of some of my old exercise routines it wasnt ok anymore!
so i got the idea of turning my eating habits on their head and then did a little digging to see if i was right.
Its hard to get used to but youve to stick with it i guess.
Ive heard about people having amazing results so hopefully!!!!
ill check out fitday now, thanks

    thats my point exactly!!

Most people with significant amount of weight to drop THINK they need some special system/diet to follow when is as plain as the nose on their face and possibly to everyone around them that they simply dont feckin' move enough and are eating poor quality foods too often.

Life is too short to be worry about weight/fat - eat right, never use a 'diet' and remember your body is built for movement!!

Ive now lost half a stone!!!im getting a bit bored and de-motivated tho, so am now considering hiring a personal trainer, for guidance, advice and motivation mostly. im willing to spend the money and the time on it, but dont really know where to start with it. if anyone could recommend any personal trainers in the galway city area that would be great, also if there are any around with flexible hours, as i work nights?? thanks

Hi, I am following a high protein, low carb diet via a unslim club. I am really disappointed I only lost 2lb in the first week. Usually your first week is a bigger weight loss. I know I'm down in weight but can't help the disappointment. I followed my recommended intake of Carbs, protein and fats to the letter, drank 2L of water every day and walked 3 times this week. :(

2lbs isnt a bad result in a week, i lost 3 the first wk then nothin for 2, stick with it, youll get there!

2lbs is very good. That's well over a stone in 8 weeks if you keep it up. Fat takes time to put on, so of course it also takes time to lose it.

Sometimes when you hear of people who lost 4 or 5lbs in the first week of a weight loss programme, the explanation can be one of two things:
    • They lost water in addition to fat
    • They are extremely obese to begin with and so lose fat faster in the early stages.

Seriously, 2lbs is an ideal amount to lose in a week. Well done!
