    Hi All -

I am in the process of buying a car and have found one which seems great – it’s a good car reasonable price.

The dealer (well he's not really a dealer but just sells cars on occasion from the street outside his shop) got an NCT for the car last week for me. (its a 2006 car)

But the NCT is only for one year.....is there such a thing as a one year NCT...? i always thought NCTs were two years....?

    Thanks

    Db

If it is a 2006 car, then it should have had it's first NCT in 2010 ( on the fourth anniversary of date of registration)

The current NCT would have been back-dated to this date in 2010, and will therefore expire on that date in 2012.

the nct is always calculated from a cars birthday. If the car was left lying up for a while or the previous owner never bothered with an nct when when the test is eventually done it will be backdated to when the test should have been done.

If you delay a test it will still apply from the date the test should have been done so if you are 6 months late getting it tested, you will get an 18 month test.
It sounds more complicated than it is, but essentially it is nothing to worry about. The next time assuming it is tested on time you will get a 2 year test.

My thinking is the car wasn't given the NCT on time when it was due, eg. if my NCT expires today and I do the test tommorrow I would get issued a cert for two years, however if I do the NCT in a years time they will backdate the cert from the day of expiry thus leading to a one year NCT.

There was talks about introducing a yearly NCT for cars over 10 years old but I don't think it has come in yet. I put my car through the NCT in February after it expired in Dec 2010 and they gave me the cert until December 2012 and not Feb 2013, so it doesn't look like the one year test has come in yet.

What happens if your two years late? Do they make you do it twice :pac:

As the others have said, the owner 'forgot' to NCT the car. Did they get around to servicing it?

Good question, I suppose it would skipped and the normal schedule followed, I'm sure it has happened with cars in storage and some garages have cars sitting in their yards three years now with the economic crisis.

To be precise, the NCT, unlike Motor Tax, cannot be back-dated. It is only ever valid from the actual date of passing the test until the next renewal date. However if the test date is within 90days in advance of the next renewal date, then the cert is valid until the next renewal in 2 years.

Correct, it would be skipped and you're on a new renewal cycle.
