Long story short, i came off my bike (Freak accident, nobody else involved) on my commute home from work last week. I fractured my scaphoid bone in my hand and i'm now in a cast :( for about 6 weeks

This happened just as i was turning up the training for olympic tris in Spiddal and Athy at the end of may begining of june. I spose i won't be racing these now. More poor me.

Anyhow, has this happened anyone else before? Could you get any training done while injured? How long before you got back to full welly? Anything in particular aid recovery?

I did mine the same way(only there was a bus involved) I was able to continue running was as they didn't actually find the fracture until it was almost healed(despite xrays), I wasn't able to cycle for a few weeks though...

Scaphoid fractures are notorious for not showing up on x-ray straight away
Often it'll be casted and x-rayed two weeks later

One thing to watch out for is avascular necrosis though, due to its retrograde blood supply

Sounds very familiar - came off my MTB a good number of years ago and done my scaphoid (was wearing my watch on my wrist) and fractured a bone in my other arm. My problem wasn't getting back training it was wiping my a$$ and it happened a week before I was going to a golf resort in Portugal  - ah well at least the OH had to carry the cases :p.
Also took several X-Rays to show up, I found once it was imobilised I could run, but cycling took about 2 months from memory and my golf swing has never been the same. Suppose get a combination of running and stationery cycling in.

I did mine skiing a few years ago (before my running career )
Thought it was just a sprain and wasn't diagnosed for 2 months! Then had to have a bone graft 'cause the break wasn't healing (something to do with the blood supply to the bone and where the break actually occurs).

So for 2 months I had a broken bone, didn't know it and was carrying babies around and changing nappies and all, no bother. Once I had the cast on it was another story of course...

The only thing that'd be a hindrance to training would be the weight / awkwardness of the cast, I imagine (...but I'm no expert!?)

Hope it heals up well for you.

    Thanks for the replies.

It only showed up on second xrays after 10 days and thats when they put on the cast.... thought it was just a sprain up to that.

Well nothing more can be done about it now, just hope it heals ok now it's imobilised.
