Looking for an oil at the cheaper end of what is specified for use in pd diesel engines. This is for a 2005 1.9 octavia. I want the right oil but Im sure there are various manufacturers offering an oil to the correct spec.

I think you need VW 507 spec oil for those. Not that many cheap options, they're all reasonably expensive synthetics. Your talking €50+ for 5L.

For the 1.9 PD VW 505.01 will do you.
That is not the longlife one as far as I know. I think the VW507 is, maybe.
505.01 is the normal 10,000 mile or 1 year oil for a 1.9 PD.

Do not mix it up with VW505.00

    Mobil 1 5w/30 or 5w/40.

Around €50 would be reasonable. Im hoping to avoid castrol with there 4L cans and prices for an additional 1L.
    Must do some research.

I actually use mobil 1 5w30-esp in my own car. Its meets longlife spec for that.

Its for a wreck of an octavia so Im not overly worried as long as its recommended.

I remember you saying that but it sounded wrong to me.
What exact oil does the dealer supply for that money?

Interesting, Ive seen that stuff all over Ebay for £20 but didnt know anything of the quality of it. I certainly didnt know it was a vw group brand. Now that I see it, I think Ive seen that can on the counter of the local audi dealer parts department priced pretty reasonably too but alot more than £18.
    Thanks for that.

Indeed, I got 5 litres of Mobil 1 0w 30 or 40 for less then E50 which I was happy with. The Castrol being 4 litires is a sly trick. Very sly!

    Sean1141,

Is there a particular dealer you go to or would any dealer by happy to sell that oil? I am not too experienced with buying parts off dealers. I always assume they dont like you doing things yourself :p

Since I am based in Belfast for most of the year I may get that oil and parts instead.
I was a fan of the 0w30/40 in the Winter since my engine could take it so I am debating whether I get it again for the sake of my old engine.

A local petrol station sells Total Quarts 9000 or something for about 40 euro. It. . . Bollix, it doesnt meet 505.01!!

I almost abandoned this post but I guess its good to know that it doesnt meet the spec that you need.

I remember my boss selling that to someone with a PD engine and I just died a bit inside. As someone who did loads of research into my engine with regards to oil and then to see what is causing problems with PD engines happen in front of you. .

I digress a wee bit but the moral is dont let the sales person sell you anything!! Just hand over the money once you found what you need :p

I get it off a seat dealer up north. im sure any dealer will hand you out the same can of oil no problem but maybe not at the same price!:p

I got mine off sere motors in belfast. the full service kit above is for a 1.9 tdi 150bhp seat leon. it cost me 60euro delivered to my door. The local motor-factor told me he would not be able to suply me with 4.5L of comma pd spec oil and an oil filter for that money..

also some oil say they meet the vw 505.01 spec but they are not approved by vw.. i dont know if this is important but we all know the way addvertisers work now days.. tell you what you want to hear just to get a sale

    Very good point.

There are certain words to look out for if I remember correctly.

An oil saying it has approved standards followed by a list is what you need rather then recommended I believe.

I went into an audi dealer parts counter to price the quantum pd oil. The main man there who I have often dealt with before and knows what he is talking about usually told me there is only 2 types they stock - The quantum longlife 5w30 for longlife servicing and quantum synta 10w/40 which he insisted was the correct oil for fixed servicing on pd engines without dpf. Now I looked and its only 505.00 spec.
I told him there was another oil, the platinum 5w/40. He said no, there is only 2 types they use. He then said I must have seen the 5w40 platinum in the uk and that its not distributed here.
What does this say about the servicing being carried out at some garages?
Luckily I got a price from the seat dealer in northern ireland (mentioned earlier) for 5L 5w/40 quantum platinum & oil filter delivered to mayo for about £33.

either they are very good and put in longlife oil or they are crap and put in non pd spec oil..
is the skoda a 105bhp tdi?

yep 105bhp. Its not mine but I will be changing the oil in it.

i gave 60 quid for oil, oil filter, air filter, diesel filter and a sump plug for my sisters mk2 leon 105 tdi. guess it would be the very same engine

Santry Motor factors sold me a 5l of Mannol Oil with the high spec of 507.00 for the princely sum of 25 euro for my PD engined Ford Galaxy.

507.00 is the long life stuff but I only leave it in the engine for 10,000 km.

It meets the spec so should do the job for the OP at a reasonable price.

You can't deduce anything from that.

its 5w 40 its not as thick as the vw oil. The car dose not run as smooth as when its filled with vw oil. Also the motor factor oil says it meets vw spec for pd engine's where as the vw oil i put up pics of is approved by vw

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 555 ✭✭✭crosshair1

For anyone interested these are Vw's specs as to whose oil meets their criteria...not oils that claim to be up to the standards.

    Any Updates?
Cheaper sources for these PD engine oils.

jeepers, zombie thread from over 2 years ago. You might be better sending a PM to the OP.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,688 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

The main dealer quantum oils are still about as good as it gets price wise for oil that is actually approved as far as Ive seen.
Lots of other oils that say they meet the spec for vw 505.01 but Id say that is not quite the same as saying approved by vw.
My local Motor factors has shelves full of North Sea Lubricants cans. Im assuming this is muck but I know nothing about it.

Bought an A6 130. Found a drum of comma oil in the boot of 505 00 spec. Why cant people just get the right oil. Put in castrol edge 507 00. €44 in halfords with trade card.

Its a 4ltr drum and engine only takes 3.8

People don't know about oils and most don't care.
People will just ask in service stations for oil and without fail will be sold the wrong stuff.

Any views on Total Quartz INEO oil for these engines.

The castrol seems to be very expensive?

Is the Quantum oil pretty good?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,652 ✭✭✭Chimaera

Bit of a necro post again. No idea on that oil, but one thing to bear in mind is that anything with a DPF needs 507 00 oil: the older specs have a higher ash content that clogs up the DPF and kills it.

Quantum is VAG's own oil brand so yes I'd expect it to be good.

If you want a more economically priced oil have a look for LiquiMoly's TopTec range.

Cheers, I presume the etiquette is to find a similar thread rather than starting a new one.

    I need 505.01.

I'm happy enough to get whatever, but wondered is there a good reason for getting the Castrol.

    Thanks

This post on askaboutmoney.com lists a few alternatives.

I've used the Total Quartz INEO stuff and not had any problems, FWIW.

Total is a good brand, just make sure the oil you get meets the required spec for your engine.

Quantum is sold through VW dealerships and is very reasonable, I always buy it as its 507 spec.

    How much for 5L?

I purchased this today. Free delivery and they deduct the 20% VAT for me.

It's the more expensive VW 507 00 spec oil. So by doing it myself, new oil & filter for €50! :)

That's a very good price. If there was a VW closer to me I would have got it.

Will remember for my next service to pick up a bottle when passing the VW dealer.

Yeah, just select 5L in the drop-down menu.

I have my VAT number registered with amazon so they deduct the 20% UK VAT rate.

Very handy for buying work related items.

No, I rang the parts dept today asking about oil. Thats where I heard about it.
Oil is normally 48 , doing oil and genuine vw filter for 50. So a good offer I think.
