iv been living in my own place since i was 19, im 22 now and unemployed i want to go to college next year but because im not 23 before jan 11 im told my grant is going to be based on my parents income is this true?

i will be 23 when the student year begins, im 23 in july.

this is a bit of a joke in all fairness 22 years of age and they judge you of your parents income, im on social welfare and currently getting rent allowance i dont see why i should be based of my parents income , iv been working and living on my own for years and dont rely on money from parents so is there a way around this?

and potentially how much would i lose out on?

    thanks for the help

Yes - you would have to be 23 on January 1st this year. Is it possible to apply based on your parents income?

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

    thanks for the reply.

im not sure mate, i think il just wait another year to be honest and keep trying to look for work because im not in a situation to lose money on a grant that i need for college otherwise i couldn't afford college, not with the travelling and expenses involved aswell as still having to pay my rent etc.

22 years of age is classed as an adult so its beyond a joke really that you are judged from your parents income even though i dont even with live with either of them, i feel like im back in secondary school here filling this in:D.

If you are currently receiving social welfare have you looked at or spoke to them about BTEA (Back to Education Allowance) ??

What kind of fees are you going to pay to do your course? Where are you going and what are you doing?
