My mrs has a 04 tdi 100 S (old model). solid enough motor to drive but not great handling IMO, slightly under powered lower down the revs. The clutch went at 80k miles, and apparently is a weakness in these VAG's, couldnt afford to change the flywheel - which is recommended but would have cost about 500 quid extra with the clutch.

Electric window drivers side has fcuked up on a couple of occasions, my neighbour has a 04 2.0t with similar window issues! Boot aint great, long enough but the opening is a bit tight for big stuff from the bottom of the rear windscreen to the floor/bumper. Not as roomy in the back seats as a mondeo, for instance. I couldnt really recommend it as an enjoyable car to drive - bit of a tractor compared to an audi for instance - my 2cents!

Has 99.9% DNA of the passat. :pac:

Check for service history & cam belt changes every 60k or 4 years.
They do have some weaknesses as mentioned :
    Suspension arms.
    Window regulators.
Water ingress - block drains causing ECU probs.
    Boot lock mechanisms.
    Weak 6 speed gearbox.

PD engines need to be serviced on the button.
Not the worst cars in the world - iv had three in my time, all 130bhp Sport variants, which I would only opt for, if buying again (But probably not :D )...

    My 2c

Have a 2005 100bhp passat a while now and I've had absolutely no problems with it. It doesn't seem too underpowered but I did have a chip fitted for a few days and it was a noticeable increase but to be honest the 100 is grand as it is.

Servicing is a big part of owning a pd engined VW but if serviced as per the book it will last forever. There is a taxi driver near me who has an 04 passat with 360,000 miles on the clock which only went through 2 clutches and a turbo at 250k. he services it on the button with proper oil etc and it served him well and still going.

Overall I'm very happy with mine. Sure an audi would be nice but the passat is every bit the car the a4 is. The 05 tdi passage are going for very handy money in the uk and a highline can be picked up very reasonably. Plus most of the uk cars have full service histories with them and most of the Brits tend to use main dealers for servicing so services are generally done as per the book.

I have a 03 100tdi with 180k and still going great. Only problems so far was the passenger electric window and some connector that needed fixing somewhere, (showed up as an injector problem on diagnostics, fixed for 70 euro if I remember correctly). The only thing that gets to me is the soft suspension, need to watch the sump!

I have a 2005 one with 162km. No major issues but the water ingress problem is a right pain and expensive too to render.

Agree with others on soft suspension.

Mid to high 40's if you treat it right and don't keep flooring the turbo!
