connect your coaxcable for the second Box to the main receiver and see if the cable is faulty. We had the same problem on many occasions and the cable was always the cause of it. Good luck;)

    It should look like this:

You can use this to connect the receiver to the television too might help you figure out why the scart isn't working.

Where did you get the sat cable from?? did you terminate it yourself? Double check its correctly terminated and F connectors are tight..

I was installing a freesat system a few weeks ago..got dish up and aligned.. cabled into the house only to realize i made a balls of the terminations.. back up onto the roof!!!!

Why are you in the attic?? Connect a cable direct from the dish to the box and that will do the trick-the more joints on the cable the more chance something will go wrong.
F connectors go on each end of the cable-one connects to the lnb on the dish and the other to the dish/lnb input on the back of the box.

thanks for that zerks, i was in the attic coz the sky installer fella had undone al the cables so i didnt know which cable went where!!! dont know why he done that coz he put up a second dish on the other side of the house and didnt need to go near that one!! ur guess is as good as mine..

Second dish on the other side of house? Was this guy legit?

hay gingernut, it was a proper sky instaler, its the one they sent out to install my sky plus in the sittingroom... he said it would be better to put up another dish and to run it straight to the box downstairs, when i asked him about putting the fta (tha twas in the sittinroom) upstairs he said all u have to do i connect the cable frm the old dish to the cable goin into my bedroom and that should work straight away, but when i got into the attic there ar 2 cables comming frm the dish and there ar 2 cables going into my bedroom, so im guessing that maybe one og the cables is for the ariel to get the irish channels.. coz i didnt get the irish channels on the fta box.. so thats why im gettin into the attic every 5 mins to reconnecet and connect cables coz i dont know which is which, its like spagetti junction up there..

It sounds a lot like you don't in fact have a cable going directly from this satellite box to the (working) satellite dish.

    hi pyecontinental,

no it dosnt do directly frm dish to box, because it was connected to a box downstairs, the cable is in the attic, (im trying to explain this without sounding totally stupid) so the cable frm the dish stops in the attic, which has those screwy connectors on the end, so determing which room i want it to go to i connect the said cable for that room, but im not getting a signal now!!!! its driving me bananas!!!!

What are you using to join the cables in the attic?
Where the cable comes down into the room you are trying to install the box what sort of connection are you using to connect the wire to the box?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 509 ✭✭✭PyeContinental

Sounds like you need to trace the cables that you have in the attic and find out what they're connected to. If you had a "satfinder" tool (available for about a tenner from ebay) you could connect this to each cable you have in the attic and see if you get a reading.

In the end though, it might be quicker if you just get a single length of cable and put in a continuous run from the dish to the room yourself.

12 element.. they ar screwy ones, not the old type.. dont know there name sorry, it has the bare copper wire in the middle, and the two cables ar connected to a F type barrell connector.. if that makes any sense..

    hi pyecontinental

Yeah i think ur right but ive no head for heights.. cant get up on my roof id have a heart attack, looks like im gonna have to get an installer in, which i didnt really want to do but im stuck on this one.... im so close but yet sooo far!! :(

How comes the sky man didnt tune check your telly was working before he left? How did he know he had finished his work? If you paid him already for a working Satellite connection I'd be getting him back pronto!

gingernut, the sky fella inatalled sky plus in the sittinroon for me, and the fta sky that was in the sittinroom i want to move upstairs in my bedroom, so the sky lad done his job really, everything is fine with the sky plus downstairs, im just havin problems with installing the fta sky upstairs.. the sky fella said it wasnt in his job discription to move the fta upstairs for me, even thou i said i would pay him to do it for me, as he said himself its not a big job coz the cables are already there..

The screwy things you're talking about are called f-connectors. What type of connection are you using to connect to the box? Is the wire just coming out of the wall with an f-connector on the end?

fair enough so. can you get a telly and the sky box into the attic and a spare / short piece of cable see is it connected from there?

So correct me if im wrong!! You now have 2 dishes on your house..

    1. newly installed Sky dish feeding your plus box in sitting room.
    2. Old dish (supposedly) feeding your old fta box in bedroom..

Is there a spare LNB port on your new sky dish? Can you run a cable from that to the FTA box in bedroom?
Are you sure the Older dish has not moved therefore disrupting the signal..
Have you checked the FTA box on the newly installed cable in your sitting room to rule out a box issue?(all points to the same satellite)

This thread is even annoying me now!!!:D

I think what he might have done is use the one existing cable you had and reroute that to the new dish. Then, I suspect he only added one new cable run, so that you have two cables going to your new Sky+ box in your sitting room.
This seems all the more likely I think, considering you mentioned that he talked about sticking rigidly to the job specification and no more.

The cable you are looking at in the attic I suspect is unfortunately no longer connected to any satellite dish.
