i am a 22 year old girl who knows nothing about cars and i really dont wanna be ripped off so wanna pretend like i know what im taking about!!

The labour/time involved in removing and refitting the section of exhaust will be the same as removing the old bit and fitting a new piece; it may even take a bit longer, depending on the condition of bolts, clamps, etc. New stuff is usually much easier/quicker to work with then old. Bolts and clamps can just be cut off if new parts are to be fitted, they have to be dismantled properly and carefully if they're to be reused.
The main variable will be the difference between having the old piece repaired vs. the cost of a new part.

    thanks rovi....
i was told it would be a lot cheaper to have the two parts welded back together again instead of replacing the whole thing though?

Depends on where on the exhaust is broken. It can be very hard to get people to weld an exhaust cos they stand to lose out on what they can make from selling and fitting a new one but there's a guy in Atlas tyres in Bluebell industrial estate that welded mine when 3 other places said it couldnt be done. I've done 20,000 miles since with no problems. Charged 20quid for it!

its broken directly behind the back box thing between that and the pipe! there's an atlas in stillorgan, reckon they'd do it to?

If you can see the damage take a pic and post it here, and people might be better able to advise you of the options.

Do you know it even needs a weld? a bracket may have broken and could just be replaced with a clap etc...

Also depending on the make / model / year of car the part of the exhaust might be quite cheap. I got a back box for Peugot 306 for €50 new there a few years back and fitted myself. It wouldn't even be worth trying to weld it, if the new part is that cheap.

IF the welding can be done (properly!) without having to dismantle the exhaust system, it'll amount to whatever the weldor decides to charge for their time/consumables/use of facilities.

If significant dismantling is required or if significant fabrication is required to replace rotten or badly damaged items, you're getting closer and closer to it being better/more economic to replace with new.

It depends on how badly damaged the original exhaust is, and where the damage is located.

does anyone know roughly how much it would cost to just get the exhaust replaced then? its litterally just the back box hanging off and low.
    thanks for all your help!!

Unless you've got one of the bigger engines, the back silencer runs about €60 from micksgarage.ie:

I've used these guys several times for exhausts and the work has always been top notch. I've always been getting new exhausts fitted, never just repair jobs so I'm not 100% sure on the costs but they're nice lads, just give them a call and I'm sure they'd quote you.
