What happens to your dole money if you can't make it down to collect it? Can someone else pick it up for you, will they hold onto it for you if you ask them or do you just get double the following week? Thanks

No, someone else cant pick it up for you. If you dont pick it up that week the payment lapses and you have to put it in writing why you didnt pick up your payment. If you have a valid reason why you didnt pick it up and didnt inform the dole office you couldnt collect it then it will be reissued and will be there with a later payment. If you dont have a good reason then you *might* have your claim suspended though it depends, usually theyll let you away the first time if your honest and genuinely forgot.

Edit:The above is what will happen if you dont inform them, what you should do is ring up your local office and explain the situation to them. The sooner the better. They can hold the payments before they are issued to the post office. Youll have to wait till your next dole day but youll get a double payment.

Sorry to hijack your thread but is it possible to collect the day before your collection date, let me explain...

I collect mine on a friday (i know its not the usual day for most people but i requested that day and my local office happily obliged). Anyway theres a friday im not able to collect it coming up and i know they keep it for 3 days or so, i was wondering though if i could collect it on the thursday. The receipt always says the payment is for the week of whatever always starting on a tuesday. So is my money usually in the post office on a tuesday but they allow me to go about as if its a friday?

No. If you have an agreed payment day of a Friday, they won't give it to you early. They're not allowed.

Thanks for all the replies. It's for my brother who is sick in hospital so obviously can't make it to the post office. I think I will call the post office and see what they say, he said they know him down there so they may hold it for him, fingers crossed.

Every chance it will be there in advance of the Friday.

If they can't hold it for your brother and it is returned to the SW, he can get it released when he comes out of hospital but make sure he gets a letter from the hospital the day he leaves which sets out the days he was there. When he takes this letter to the Social Welfare and assuming this is a short term illness, his backpayments should reach the PO in a week or so. Hope he gets well soon.

ah thanks very much. it's mad the way some post office will do one thing, while others won't, and some dole offices will do one the that others won't!! I'll let you all know what happens.

If your brother is in hospital he should be applying for Illness Benefit as he is not entitled to Jobseekers as he is unable to jobseek and is unavailable for work.

He was only admitted on Monday morning and they said he should be out by the end of the week so it would hardly be worth switching to illness benfit for the week? Anyway he called the post office this afternoon and they said I could pick it up for him tomorrow as long as I have his social services card, my social services card and photo id for myself. I thought that was really good of them cos they could of said no. anyway thanks for all the advice. Most people on here are so so helpful.:)

Irrelivant Question: Does everybody pick up Dole on Wednesdays or is it staggered through the week? Just curious.
