It seems being Welsh was enough for Ryan Giggs to get it and now Gareth Bale gets the same treatment.

Nasri got 2nd and Tevez got 3rd

Criminal. 7 goals and a couple of assists in 28 games.

But I suppose he is the Amir Khan of Football.

Arshavin has 6 Goals and 11 Assists. CRAP
Gareth Bale gets 7 Goals and 1 Assist. PFA POTY

Is it based on just the league or all competitions? Had 2 great games against Inter, don't remember him doing anything special in the league

Bit of a joke Bale is player of the year if Wiltshire beats him to young player?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 510 ✭✭✭Fursttimer

He won the senior award however he finished second to Wilshere in the young player section

    :pac:

He's good but obviously not as good/english as wiltshire. QED

Its all a joke tbh, players probably just vote for the person who is less of an asshole than the others, more of a popularity contest than a valid basis for determining the player of the year.

Should be Dirk - true that!

It just proves the ongoing prejudice against Manchester United players with soul glo hair.

Should have been Charlie Adam considering the impact he has had at Blackpool who are a much lesser club than Spurs. Bale has had a great season stats don't tell the whole story like some people on this forum think they do. Nobody has been consistently exceptional in the PL this year but imo Charlie Adam wasn't far off. Amazingly enough he didn't even get top 3, great awards :pac:

Do they feel as if he has to be in the team?

Why? he hasn't been in the team of the year in about 6 seasons.

Who'd have thought that THE BEST PLAYER THAT EVER LIVED would win this "prestigious award"?

Sorry bout deleting that post! Just noticed a thread was posted up in relation to it.

I think we all know Baines should be in his place.

Bale getting it is a farce.

He was outstanding in the first three months of the season but hasn't done much to deserve this accolade.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,342 ✭✭✭✭That_Guy

At least Gareth Barry didn't win it... He'd still be making his way up to collect the award now. :pac:

Evra has been hit or miss, Clichy has been garbage, Kolarov just plain average, etc. If Ashley Cole wasn't so dislikable and not English, no one would be even questioning his place in a Premier League XI.

    VDS-Baines-Vidic-Kompany-A.N Other- Nani-Parker-Wilshere-Adam-Tevez-Berbatov

Player of the year- Not Bale

if evidence was needed that pro footballers lack intelligence this decision surely confirms it

Wow. It kinda shows the ludicrous nature of the voting process in February. There's really no reason whatsoever as to why it should be so. Hilarious.

    Exactly. Players vote for it.

You're not going to get people voting for Nani or whoever because they think hes a cnut.

Bales a nice lad, super season and a great player.

    Obvious choice.

An awful lot of disrespect or jealousy about the decision of professional footballers to award this accolade to Garreth Bale, it is the Players choice and they know because they play the game for a living

If you asked the players now, there's no way it'd be Bale. It's Bale because they asked the month when he was playing outstanding in the CL. In the league, he hasn't even been Spurs' best player imo.

Ridiculous. And its just as ridiculous that Nasri got second. It will be interesting to see the who the football writers go for.

A question to Spurs fans: do you honestly think that Bale deserves player of the year? I'll be honest, I haven't watched every game that Spurs have played, but I reckon Modric has been a far more critical player for you guys.

Another award rendered into meaningless now I guess, definitly not a deserved winner, he hasnt even being Totenhams best player

Modric has been far superior this season

Its a pretty bad reflection on the EPL that Bale is the player of the year .
7 goals and one assist is pretty poor.
A certain player that Bale is supposedly in the same category as, has 48 goals and 23 assists so far this season .

Much as I don't like him, I think Nani probably deserved it this season, but there has not been an outstanding player who unquestionably deserves it this year imo.

Bale... not even Tottenham's 2nd best player this year(VdV, Modric) and player of the season... astounding! Amazing what roasting Inter can do for your rep...

In fairness this award was proven to be a farce when Giggs won it, I don't see how that would change this year..

Giggs winning it was a bigger joke than Bale.

This kind of reminds me of that story of when John Lennon was asked if Ringo was the best drummer in the world and he laughed answering "he's not even the best drummer in the Beatles". Over the whole season, as mentioned numerous times above, Bale was not even Spurs best or most influential player.

Although it may be undeserved, you can't take away from the fact that he had a number of outstanding performances during the season. I think the biggest problem for him barring the obvious problems with injuries and hype was that he peaked a bit too early in the season; clubs found out what a threat he truly was and simply squeezed him out of the game as a result. In a number of his later games that I watched, whenever he had the ball he was almost always crowded out by defenders. I suppose you could say that this happens to all talented wingers but it just appeared even more so with him.

This whole POTY business presents many questions....
    - Why vote in Febuary? If we are pedantic, surely the best player of Jan/Feb 2011 is POTY. It's not Gareth Bale.
    - Does the POTY award include performances for the whole of the previous year then? January 2010 to December 2010? Again, not Gareth Bale
    - Why can't they vote in May and have the awards presentation before the next season begins?

The whole thing is a joke. The main award and young player award should be totally separate and you should only be allowed to be nominated in one category.

Bale was very good early in the season, got injured and has done fcuk all since, same with Nasri. Nani has been the most consistent and with 18 assists and 9? goals, its ridiculous he wasn't even nominated.

the award will probably add another 10 million to the ever increasing value placed on Bale. He's a very good player and I'm sure he'll get better year on year but people putting price tags of £60-£70 million on him is insane.

Giggs had probably around as many standout performances that season as Bale has had this season.

Its much of a muchness really. In fact I would probably agree with you in that both had maybe 3 or 4 standout performances in the year but really its a pointless argument. Neither Giggs nor Bale should ever have won.
