Job offer- to take or not?

    Hi,
    Ive been subbing in different schools for the last few years. Ive been lucky enough to get long term work like maternity eaves. I received a call from a principal I had worked with las year. They would like me to do some RPT hours from September. Very few hours so far (about 8) but I would get supervision, study etc to bump it up. The problem is that I was quite unhappy teaching in the school. Staff were cool but the students were very challenging and I foundit a struggle to do any work with them. Has anyone gone from sub to RPT? Did i make it easier? I know its very early to decide, but my current principal will have nothing for me after May. Would it be worthwhile to work anywhere to start building to a CID and stop worrying about getting the next subbing job? Any input would be great- non-teaching friends just dont get these kind of questions!

    Naturally a years teaching (even only 8 hours) is better than nothing.

    I am a little confused however as I was under the impression that no posts either full time or part time were to be filled without express permission of redeployment director.

    How is this principal able to offer hours for next year where teachers in other schools are being called in for a chat and told redeployment may take their jobs off them.

    Is this principal hoping to have hours or actually offering hours. Has the position been advertised??

    It is possible that the school are paying for the hours from their own budget. I know a few people in similar circumstances.

    I should have been a bit clearer... the hours are likely to be there. I cant imagine somebody being redeployed to 8 hours (but I could be wrong!). The real question was really if 8 hours are worth accepting...all on a gentleman's agreement of course and if anyone has gone back to a school they have subbed in and found it to be a more positive experience as the students dont see you as the sub to act out on?

    Imo, you should take it. I would presume the principal is doing the same as mine, planning to pay teachers out of the school budget.

    If you ever want to get a CID, take it! All the maternity leaves in the world won't get you a CID and seeing as nowhere is hiring, you should be biting his hand off. If it's a VEC school and you got work in another VEC school the following year, the hours will count towards a CID.

    A word of warning though - if they are 'private' hours, they won't count towards a CID (as always, open to correction).

    Deemark you are correct, as a colleague of mine found out this year. I'd still take it though as you'll get more hours of subbing on top of that more than likely.

    I know it's easy for me to say seeing as I have a job, but I'd be very careful of getting locked into a school you were quite unhappy in.

    I've seen what that can do to a person.

    It is a lot more positive when students know you are their teacher - and not a sub!
