Hey folks, there's a pool-based 24hr swim taking place in waterford this weekend (). Anyone know if there are any irish records for distance covered etc.? I didnt know there was an ultra-swimming scene in the country!

Heard most of the people involved got ill after doing part of the swim and one of the guys who did longest swim ended up with chlorine poison and had to spend time in hospital with bronchi problems, disaster for swimming pool management, wonder if they have White flag award in that particular pool?????swimmers beware???

Chlorine really shouldn't have had any noticeable effect by mile 3, certainly over 24 hours, there is bound to be some chlorine related side effects, even within the guidelines, especially in an indoor pool. Ideally an outdoor pool with a salt water system and DE filters would be the kind of facility for such an event.. As for whether pool managment could have done anything about it, It depends on the numbers of people in the pool during the swim, and the dosing system in place. but it probably shouldn't have ended like that for him.

    Hi Guys,

I am the guy who end up in the hospital. Basically my lungs collapse on the Monday passed out. had chlorine poisoning and then chemical pneumonia. I had Xray and lots of stuff...... a few days later I passed out in the middle of the night and went back to the hospital. I had my hears, eyes, nose bleeding and still today. Doctors says it will take 3 month to get of my blood as chlorine went through the skin as well to the blood stream.

The swim was great and I am extremely happy I took part. The pool management were very supportive and flush the chlorine as soon as some of the guys got a bad cough. I am not sure if they could have done better and will certainly be a learning experience for all.

I was responsible to my illness, I came in the morning with a blocked nose and a sprain ankle. I am training for the channel and wanted to do a 42k swim instead of the 1mile repeat as ask by the organiser.

So I brake most of the rules of instead swim 30min and 30min in I stayed more time in the pool which with been already sick make me inhale the chlorine straight in my lungs for longer and in weak body :o

Which made me loosing about 4h straight swim as I could not breath. I knew after 14h the guy were getting sick and I could have stopped but kept going.

I will certainly do it again next year If I was asked and will put some strategy to avoid a repeat..... if my partner let me go :P

How was the Kilkenny 24h ?

    Hi locteau,

I haven't been on boards for a while so I just saw your post now. Well done on getting that distance done! Hope your Channel training is going well, what tide are you signed up for and who's your pilot?

I did the Kilkenny 24hr, it went very well. Donal has a great write-up of it here. The Watershed pool that we used is a UV treated pool so it was perfect for a long swim like that-almost eliminating the chlorine issue. I had a sore throat after but it was sore before I started anyway so I wasn't surprised when it got worse as I went on! Management and staff at the pool couldn't have done more for us either-we had a room off the pool to store our stuff and which had access to outside so we could get fresh air when we wanted. If it runs there again next year and if anyone is thinking about the challenge I'd highly recommend the location.

As regards the swim itself-I must say that I found the format quite tough. I've done lots of long (20km+) pool swims but I found the getting back in every hour more difficult than just being in and swimming. I was happy enough once I was swimming, but each hour, especially in the middle of the night, I'd really have to talk myself into getting back in there again when I'd just gotten warm and comfy. I think I'd have preferred to get in and just swim the 40km straight through (although at my current fitness level my body might disagree)!

I don't think that there are any records kept for pool distances in Ireland. It would be interesting though! I've heard of at least one person doing English Channel distance (35km) in a pool session. I'd suspect that the 24hr distances (around the 40km mark) are the longest that would have been done in a pool over a 24 hour period but of course that's not one straight-through session. I don't know if there are competitive swimmers out there doing longer distances than those in a session.

We have a local list of distance records for open water swims by Cork swimmers, it's available here. I don't think that there's a similar list kept for the whole country. It would be great to have but a lot of work to maintain!
