I used to think the EPL was the be all and end all of football.

I'll never forget during the '98 World Cup, myself and a few of the other kids from the estate were out playing ball when one of the younger lads asked what relation was Roberto Baggio to Roberto Carlos
Despite Dino Baggio being in the Italy squad at the time too

You don't have to support an English team.

Or any club team for that matter and love the sport anyway.

I used to think I would be the first woman to play in the Premiership because I didn't think that it wasn't allowed but that there just wasn't any women good enough to play! :D

Not exactly a bandwagoning year. Think it was over 20 years and counting since their last league title in 92.

oh i'd some bad ones recently enough,
I thought darren and marcus bent were brothers.
for some reason i was told when i was 10 that marco simone and diego simeone were brothers despite the different names and nationalities.

I was actuallly going to start a thread like this.

I once believed (and a lot of people still do) that Ireland were the first team to play Germany after WW2 and that is why Germany sometimes where green as their away kit.

When I was even younger (6 or 7) I thought Robbie and Roy were related :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,893 ✭✭✭The_B_Man

My missus' last name is McGrath. She thought she was related to Paul McGrath all through primary school and some of secondary school until her Da eventually told her he was only messing!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,014 ✭✭✭✭Corholio

When I was younger I used to think that Dr.Josef Venglos, ex-manager of Villa, used to be a doctor during the week and then manage Villa at weekends :P

Ah had a wee chuckle at that one, probably because I can imagine her father having a good laugh at it.

The one above also made me laugh, probably because it reminded me of something that I would think when I was small. :)

Used to think Roy and Robbie Keane were related.I was like 8 and based it only on the fact they had the same name

I used to think Neil Warnock and Stephen Warnock were brothers, thats despite the big age difference between the pair. In my defense though apparently Stephen Warnock has a brother called Neil, thats probably where my confusion stemmed from. :o

I thought Chris Sutton was still playing football all this time, up in the Scottish Prem. Even more so when I "saw" him playing on telly at the weekend.

It was his younger brother John, they have the same run!! :pac:

When I was little I didn't think defenders were allowed cross the half way line. (I didn't like watching footy as a kid, just loved playing).

What makes it funnier is I played right back for my school at the time.

When I was young, I thought that when commentators mentioned the "dubious goals panel" they were describing the goals panel as dubious rather than the reality of it being a goals panel for dubious goals! :o

i misunderstood the offside rule until i was 12.

even the basic premise of it.

i thought that once i started my run from miles back there was no way i could be offside. so you'd see me start running from my own half thinking i could never be offside because i started running from so far back...

....i believed this to the point that if i had to stop running during my run, i'd run back into my half and start again. also, i'd make sure the referee was looking at me as i started running, so he'd know i started my run.

    :o

Famous George Hamilton quote something along the lines of "The Baggio Brothers who of course aren't related"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,001 ✭✭✭ColmDawson

I remember being outraged when I found out my dad supported both Manchester United and Ireland. My five-year-old self hadn't quite grasped the difference between club teams and national teams.

My point was why ask about the Brazilian Roberto when there was another Baggio in the Italian squad. Although at the time I probably presumed the Baggios were related.

When I first started playing for my local team at 9 or 10 I had no idea what people watching on the sidelines meant when they shouted 'house'!

I also thought that the home team always kicked off because thats what happenned in Fifa!

Up until the day he died, I thought Bobby Robson was Bryan Robson's father.

I used to think the offside rule was when a player ran threw a "box" for 4 players, couldn't be arsed, but God it's funny thinking of it now.

Another one is I used to think Celtic were Irish or had a connection to Ireland, how wrong I was.

I used to think the LOI was a substandard league full of bitter supporters who envy larger, more successfull, better supported teams..............oh wait, sorry delete :D

I used to think the LoI was a football league.

Then I discovered it was a contest to see who could spend the most money that they could never possibly afford and be fcuked for the next few years

As a whipper-snapper i didn't really watch soccer, i thought the red crown paints jersey that some people had was actually just another MUFC jersey. . .there was no talk of that other team around my way

I also thought that Lee Sharpe was better than Giggs. . .coz he did a stupid corner flag dance - young people are stooopid!

I used to think you could go on beer and sprits 'til 5 in the morning and after 10 mins you'll be grand on a 10:40 kick-off.
