VW Golf - DIY Replace of Front Wheel Bearings?

    Hi all,

Would be very grateful for advice/tips on whether it's possible to replace my front wheel bearings on my Golf!

I took my car for its NCT this week, and it was fine except for the front left set of wheel bearings, which was loose. How easy/difficult is this to replace myself, or should I take it to a garage?

Additionally, if I took it to a garage, does anyone have an idea of approximately how much this would cost (parts and labour)?

    Many thanks!!:D

You'll need a 10 Tonne press to do a wheel bearing, among other tools. If you don't know how to do it, then best bring it to a garage.

This is my '10 tonne' press.

However, I would agree with fingers, unless you are somewhat competent mechanically you would be better to get someone to do it for you

if it's a golf 5 or 6 all you need is a 12 sided drive bit. Think it's an m12.

But if you have to ask is a wheel bearing possible to do yourself then you should probably bring it to a garage. If you do end up tackling it and if it's a press in bearing, put the bearing in the freezer over night. It'll shrink and make it easier to do with a vice.

I'll say that this is not really a diy job, unless you have access to a press, a puller/grinder to remove the bearing inner race from the hub, a hub puller to remove cv joint from the hub etc etc.
You may be lucky and get away without any of these but there are too many things to go wrong to be worth a diy.

Used one of those for years. When we got the press in where I was working at the time it made such a difference tho.

Id be inclined to remove the hub and bring it to a garage.

Iv done some daft stuff in the past to replace wheel bearings without a press to get me over my more broke times and iv seen others try daft stuff.

Its just not worth it bring the hub to a garage.
