But this is a place of worship and a school... perhaps if you had kids coming out of school on Bird Avenue at the same time as people were attending prayers, you would see something similar.

Also, there is an enormous supply of churches, much less so for mosques who are serving an (up until recently) rising Muslim population in Dublin.

I'm not sure there has been any justification provided for parking in the cycle lane yet.

I'm not justifying it, this isn't a cycle lane thread.

But as a cycling enthusiast myself I find it hard to believe that you don't encounter this elsewhere. The point is that this is ridiculously non-specific to Muslims, or even people of faith. We see it outside churches (especially at funerals and weddings), outside supermakets (especially during deliveries) and outside primary and secondary schools during busy times. You've just randomly chosen an example at a Muslim school & mosque and decided that for you, this means something.

About forty years ago I coined the term "Sunday dispensation" to describe the way people ignored all traffic and parking rules when attending mass, and the failure of the Garda to do anything about it.

In these multi-cultural times, perhaps I should re-cast it as "Sabbath dispensation". [Do Muslims use the word "sabbath"?]

I'm saying I don't see it at Bird Avenue but I do see it on Roebuck Road. I'm not sure why there is confusion.

The second paragraph clearly is an attempt to justify it! "Ah sure it happens at other times so why should we even talk about it?"

I'm exploring a reason why you may not be seeing it on Bird Avenue. One being that there are lots of churches and diminishing congregations.

On the other hand, this mosque is one of very few, and was, up until recently, likely increasing in terms of congregation and student numbers.

Another being that Roebuck road incorporates a school as well as a place of worship, Bird Ave. does not.

I'm not sure why this is difficult. This isn't about cycle lanes - this is about one specific cycle land you've singled out because it happens to be getting blocked by Muslims (note: Muslims, not foreigners)

Again, as a cyclist, are you trying to say you don't notice this elsewhere? Like down in Ranelagh, for example?

You are attempting to justify it though. No need to attempt to rebuke that idea.

I have not experienced it so consistently in one place, no. Every Friday, bar none, there are going to be cars parked illegally in the cycle lane when prayers take place.

Importantly, Catholics and Protestants in the other churches I have mentioned are NOT parking in cycle lanes. Parking on the footpath is allowed, as long as there are no double yellow lines.

outside Foxrock church on N11 every Sunday cycle lane is blocked by parkers.

I really doubt that it's actually fully legal to park on the footpath, just another rule ignored by all

It's more frowned upon that illegal.

No, it is illegal. No parking on a footpath (either partly or wholly). Maybe not enforced, but entirely illegal.

    (2) A vehicle shall not be parked—

    ( i ) on a footway, a grass margin or a median strip;

Why have yellow lines beside certain footpaths, and not beside others then?

If there isn't a yellow line (and no other reason prohibiting parking) you can then park on the road there. Not on the footpath.

Fair enough. They can (and do) park on the road. Not the case at the Mosque I'm afraid.

    I this now a Muslims-vs-Cyclists thread?

Because, if it is, I think that's a bad idea. We don't want to piss off the extremists - they'll be out with their beards and their strange head-gear telling us all about how much they're oppressed and how unfairly they're treated in the media. Going on and on about how they're generally really law-abiding and it's just a tiny percentage that make them all look bad...

And the Muslims might be peeved too.

I think this discussion has lost the the run of itself and that last post is in very poor taste.
