Massive rights grab. Not a competition to enter, if you value your images at all.

Just check their terms and conditions -

Sony will have the right to use the photographs entered into this competition for promotion of Sony via any medium.

You don't even have to win for them to use your image, simply enter and they want the rights to use your image as they see fit.

    AVOID.

I knew they could use the photo, that wasn't a problem for me. I am a novice hobbist photographer so I am happy to enter competitions like this.

First off you assumed I hadn't read the T&C and then you state to AVOID this compitition even though I clearly stated that I had already won.

Thank you for ruining a nice moment for me by basicaly saying that I won a nothing competition.

He didnt say that. He pointed out in his post you lose all rights on your image and some people value their work enough not to give away their rights. They use the image of an ameatuer/hobbiest and save money by not paying a professional to take some shots for them.

    Well done on you win.

No, I never said it was a nothing competition. I'm sure there were lots of people who entered, so fair play for winning.

All I'm saying is that companies like Sony love getting free images which they can then use for advertising, without ever having to pay anyone.

Why hire a professional photographer to generate images for advertising when you can simply hold a competition and get thousands of images for free?

Well done. But, em, for future reference... there's no 'a' in independent. Just saying, like...

I also don't agree with the hidden copyright theft that plagues these conversations.

That said, I'd say there were more than a fair few competitors, so absolutely hats off to you for winning. Can I ask you, did you just happen to have the photo and felt it suited the theme of the competition so belted it off to them, or did you go out with the theme in mind to try and get a photo to suit the theme?

    Congrats on your win.
