I've just put in an order for The Palaeo Diet, and was just about to buy Gary Taube's most recent book when I stopped and said I'd ask the knowledgeable folks here for their opinions and/or reviews.

Perhaps this thread could be stickied if it takes off.

Basically, here is the place to post a synopsis, review, critique or recommendation of the most important and up-to-date nutrition and diet books.

    Great idea! Here's one:

Nourishing Traditions: The Cookbook that Challenges Politically Correct Nutrition and the Diet Dictocrats

It's a cookbook but also a bit like a textbook in that it also has a lot of information about different nutrients, background about traditional food preparation techniques, and also about the problems with modern food processing.

I have mixed feelings about it. I agree with the gist of her opinions on nutrition, and the recipes and food suggestions are really useful. But she puts forward her points in a quite sensationalist way (e.g., telling an anecdote about a vegetarianism campaigner who commited suicide and implying that there was a connection). And some of the claims are poorly backed up (e.g., she claims that microwaved food is dangerous - when you check the footnote, the reference is to a magazine article). I don't have the book in front of me so I hope I didn't get those examples wrong, but the points apply to the book in general.

So basically if you are interested in learning more about the benefits of eating traditional food prepared in traditional ways, and recipes for how to do so, this is a useful resource. But I don't recommend it as a nutritional reference - even though I agree with most of what she says, it's poorly referenced and very ideological rather than objective. I do recommend the book, but read it with a skeptical eye :)

i would second sally fallons book mentioned above and those guys have been getting it right for about 20years now!!!

I would add in mark sissions book - the primal blueprint also as it covers exercise, sleep etc also.

to be honest i would possibly include a book on how to change your mindset/motivation/values etc and something like Unlimited power by Robbins (or awaken the giant) fits the bill IMO - his live gigs are stunning!!

If you are planning to opt for various nutritional supplements then the best way is to look in for a good physician so that you can supply your body with the right amount of supplements at a right age. So, if you are planning to look in for a good quality nutritional supplement then make a search about reputed companies available online.
