What's up? I have a question for Satellite users in the UK, or anybody who might know. I've just spent the last year being an English teacher in Russia and I really like their PlatformaHD/Tricolor TV channels. I'm using a General Satellite GS-9300HD currently and wanted to know if this receiver will work in the UK?

If not, is there a DRE-Crypt CAM that I'd be able to use with a receiver I pick up back home?

    Sincerely,
    George

The receiver will work, if you have a dish pointing at 9 east. Lots of Russians buy this receiver here, or bring it with them from Russia.

Getting a Dre-Crypt Cam used to be very expensive, but they've actually dropped a lot this year, for whatever reason. It might be a more practical solution, if you're going with a multi-satellite system.

I quite like the quality of the sports channels but (with my admittedly basic russian!) I don't know what you see in russian tv. Maybe its just herselfs programme choices..Dom 2, Davei pozhenimsya..(shudder).

And films entirely dubbed with a single voice.

Druss, the sports channels are specifically what I'm after, although there are some funny shows like Даешь Молодежь that showcase Russian humor pretty well. Of course, an understanding of Russian does facilitating better viewing, haha.

Well, the guy I'm boarding with uses the 9300HD, I should also see if these receivers are available back home or if I should get it here. It's probably best to get it here. If not, it doesn't seem so bad to find a DRE-Crypt CAM, then. I think my Mum has my old Cuberevo laying around. CCCAM is supported but I had read that I'd need to activate it with a GS-9300HD - so we'll see what happens.

I'll have to have a look at the satellites, I know PlatformaHD comes in the UK just fine, I wonder if Tricolor TV does - maybe it's an FTA or something. Anyway, thanks for the reply, Druss!

Have a shot of vodka - it'll warm your throat! :D

The Poles do this aswell. Very annoying I would imagine. One guy doing the voice for everyone.

That's pretty much it... I have seen some English movies that have been dubbed in Russian - it's worth watching, even just for the hilarious over-dubs themselves. It's also interesting to see how jokes are changed to fit cultural references... it's pretty amusing... lol

Platforma has more HD content, especially with sports, so its probably the way to go. Its the main reason why i tolerate it. Loads of premiership football and the russian leagues, although the National Geographic content does look well too.

Tricolor has more free stuff, but its not receivable where i am, and i doubt you'd get it in the UK either, without the right location and a huge dish. (see the map below)

The receiver you mentioned is more popular in the Russian market, as it is Dre-crypt enabled. You can occassionaly buy it as a stand alone, but more often than not, it will be paired with a subscription to Platforma. Same with the cam. The Platforma subscription is paired to the receiver, so you need a legit CAM or receiver number to register your subscription online.

Cam and receiver packs are sold at tvcorner for example, who aren't too bad on prices. Ebay i've seen range from a slightly cheaper 250 for cam and card, through to an extortionate 800 sterling. It's the same in russia..shop around! Some shops were offering 18 months for the price of 12 when i was in Russia at Christmas.

Minstrel27, the Cyfra and Polsat at least have some channels where you can switch original audio on. None of the russian channels do this. :(

On some of the big releases, russian channels do provide multiple voices. But i remember watching La Vie en Rose, where all characters were voiced by a gruff middle aged Russian. The love scenes were not so moving.

Not surprised there. That's actually exactly what I expected to hear, but it didn't hurt to ask, lol.

Absolutely, I'm looking for place to pick it up. I suppose the only real "advantage" is that I'm in the native market of these receivers, since General Satellite is in St. Petersburg.

I was looking at the DRE-Crypt website to read up on it. The schematics look impressive, hah.

You were here for Christmas - man, I hope you weren't one of the poor blokes stuck in the airport for a week with the storms, lol.

You're saying it like you've never made love to yourself before!! :D  lol

On a serious note, yeah, that's, well, disturbing.

I was just on YouTube looking for reviews and anything about the GS receiver we're talking about, and I could find only one video about General Satellite.

Are any reviews from Europe or UK about GS? (Obviously in Russia they are "thumbs up".)
