the requirements for rent allowance are that you are renting privately for at least 6 out of the last 12 months and that you are on the council list for your area

    http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social_welfare/social_welfare_payments/supplementary_welfare_schemes/rent_supplement.html

fist thing is to print off the forms that you need filled in and then go see your community welfare officer who will require some documentation from you ie rent book/lease, if your on social welfare or working you need proof of your income, you need proof that you are on or have at least applied to be on the council list, you will also need some photo id passport or drivers licence should do it

i believe that should be "OR", not "AND". ie, if you have been renting for 6 months and can prove that until now you've been able to afford it, then you don't have to be on the housing list... and vice versa. am i wrong? :)

You are correct OR is the one.In practice you are better off going with AND.

This has changed, I was renting a property for a year before I could not afford it anymore and I was given rent allowance, but then I moved and to continue receiving the rent allowance I had to put my name on the council list, which really did not a make a difference to our day to day living as there is a 3 to 5 year wait I am told by my local council and even then I might not get a house.

Some CWO's tell people that you HAVE to be on the council list, it's untrue though. It's 6 months private renting OR on the housing list of your A local authority (doesn't even have to be the one in the area you live).

If you have been getting the rent allowance with the 6 months and then move house, its a new application in their eyes now and you HAVE to go on the council list, if you are staying in the property then you are fine, but because we moved from that property thats when we went on the council list.

I'm surprised by that I thought being on the housing list was a pretty old requirement. Thought 'd heard it in early 90s, maybe it stopped being a rquirement for a while and returned?

An interesting slant on this... When I moved to Cork two years ago, having been on RA where I lived before, I was told I had to be on the council housing list. This had been so before, but it was dealt with in a few minutes... This time, it took nearly 7 months, and then the CWO decided that as my original paperwork was of course out of date, I would have to get new stuff.

As this meant getting new forms etc in from the UK, I was very upset at the further delay and rang the Citizen's Info, who immediately told me that as i had been renting for some years and of course had proof of this having had RA, the requirement to be on the housing list did not apply and I should have had RA immediately on application.

I emailed the Supervisor and the CWO was at the door the following day and RA was immediate. Took a wee bit longer to get the back money but it was done.

I would hate to be in council housing but hope that that never happens.

Should none of this be at the whim of individual CWOs and nothing was said re the no longe rbeing able to pay the rant etc
