Checking Out Of Hotel Day Early

Does anyone know what the usual policy is for hotels if people leave a day earlier than expected?
I will be booking hotels for a USA trip in the next few weeks where we will be travelling between cities in the West Coast of America.
It's possible though that we may decide to move on from a place a day early if we feel we've done all we want to do in a particular area so may move onto somewhere else at the last minute.
Would we be likely to still have to pay for the extra night that we don't use?
This may not happen at all but just wondering what the story would be if this were to happen

In my experience yes you will but it is not high season so leave a few gaps and you will have no problem finding a room to suit.
