    Hello all,

    first of all, sorry for creating a thread as my first post, im new to boards and I havent found the introductions section, apologies! I hope it's acceptable and I wont be a one time poster either I'll be staying around! :D

    Now as my title suggests, I have a 88 carina II out the back of my house looking sorry for itself so ive decided to put it to some use, its a 1.6 petrol with the 4af carburettor engine,

    I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on the difficulties/ease of a 4age (maybe 20 valve from an ae111) conversion.

    From my guess, the engine mounts should be reasonably similar given that they are both A-series engines,
    I know efi will be an issue and I will probably have to submerse a fuel pump into the tank,

    I found a thread online of a russian guy who did a 4age conversion, but the translation google provided was pretty much nonsense so it was to no avail..

    So would anyone have any information for me? Has anyone done or heard of this conversion before?

    Welcome to boards!


    When it comes to conversions anything is possible. Success usually depends on how good you are at wiring and fabricating.

    If you were to do it I'd advise buying a complete car as a donor, maybe a crashed Levin or something. Which Carina II is it? 1st or 2nd Gen?

    Well, Id be fairly limited at fabrication, also wiring wouldnt be my strongpoint but i'd surely give it a go! its a learning curve aint it! :rolleyes:

    I used to have an ae111, and they're going for peanuts now so sourcing the engine would probably be easy enough, and whatever the donor car is, i could break or whatever anyways..

    The carina is a 2nd gen saloon, great car, shame to do this, but hey its better than sending it for scrap or for export!

    Also another thing I was wondering, would the suspension set up be the same as maybe, an ae92 corolla or such?

    I've no idea about the suspension setup for that particular car. Engine conversions aren't for the feint hearted. There will be a lot of wiring, especially going from a carb to an efi engine.

    If I'm honest I would say it's not for the novice but if you have a lot of time and a lot of patience it can be done

    Hmm,

    I'll go through a few part numbers and see what the suspension matches up with, im sure there'll be another one or two models with the same kit anyways, there always is!

    When you say a lot of wiring, what would be involved? not looking for you to go through it now but, what would be the main problems that I would come across with it?

    I wouldnt really mind too much time wise, im in no panic to do it, I've worked on cars a good bit before so id say im more amateur than novice, but a conversion is new to me.
