Seriously? It's bad enough in cycle lanes without the traffic corp adding to it.

I'm actually tempted to send this to the guards - who should I send it to?

I wouldn't bother, just cycle round it. The car has hi-vis stickers for a reason.

I think if it's not stopped outside a Centra then the Guards are assumed to be going about their business.

Perhaps they read about the incident in New York below and thought it was a good idea...

Cop blocks bike lane to ticket cyclists for not using lane

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,567 ✭✭✭delta_bravo

They are obviously parking on Butt Bridge for a reason. They're not doing it to p*ss off cyclists. Anyway its a very wide road so its easy to pass the vehicle. If you brought that to Store Street they would probably laugh in your face.

    Id send it to them

So you guys think it's acceptable for them to park there? I'm amazed. I watched them get out of the car and stroll back down to the IFSC junction. There was nothing special going on. I never said that they did it deliberately to piss off cyclists - it's just typical of the attitude towards cyclists that is not specific to the guards. About 50 yards away there was empty parking spots that they could have used instead.

Yes. You're amazed? I think you might need to learn to pick your battles.

Now if you'd taken a pic of the Garda Traffic Control 4x4 that was parked in the cycle lane outside Centrain Fairview last night I might understand.

It's not acceptable to park like that regardless of Gardai or not unless responding to something serious in which case they should at least have the blues on to increase visibility and give the impression to people they're actually doing something useful, dump it on the footpath it's clearly wide enough. But would you expect anything else from the Gardai? Just take a look at Pearse st or Harcourt street to see how considerate they are

    But you think that's bad...

The cyclelanes that goes past the Carrickmines on the Glenamuck road have recently been altered to have car pickup bays in them for Luas users. so you now have a little yield triangle in the lane so cars can pull in on top of you, block the entire cycle lane and force you onto the road....

It's not up to them to prove to you that they're doing their job.

It's got big day-glo stickers on the back of it, its bright outside, if you can't see it you shouldn't be cycling on a road.

They had a van parked there earlier in the week too at about 8.15am.

aside for enforcing laws they are also supposed to be setting an example for the rest of us commoners. how do you think the above looks?
To me its just the usual lazy attitude of "we are above the law and can do what we like" that you see daily from the Gardai

It looks like the guards needed to stop on Butt Bridge.

I'm surprised some people are getting so exercised about this. You stick out your right hand and overtake the parked car. It's not like the cops blew up the bridge or something.

Nope. Send it to Joe Duffy and get the blue rinse brigade on the job. Don't think you'll get much change sending to the Gardai.

You can do the same for every other car parked in a bike lane. I take it that's OK too?

Maybe you should ask the Guards while you're complaining about their parking.

You should post it in this thread http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=71560049

The traffic corps are the dedicated unit to ensure motorist, cyclist and pedestrian traffic can navigate safely.
Write to the local superintendent and make them aware of the issue and ask for reconfirmation that An Garda view cycling facilities as car parking spaces and cyclist safe navigation as less important than abandoned motor cars.

Fair enough, I don't really like bike lanes anyway. But I see a lot of unconfident cyclists who will be afraid to, say, overtake a stopped bus. They'll wait behind for the bus to move off. Therefore, for some people, overtaking cars parked in a bike lane is not easy. This makes people less likely to cycle, leading to fewer cyclists, less safety in numbers etc

Should have waited behind it until they came back.

It's not a big deal. The Gardai should avoid parking like this if they can but cyclists should be able to cycle around.

At the same time, it's ironic given that the force only in the last week were pushing the idea that cycling is more dangerous than it is (the stats they linked to cycling were misleading). If cycling was as bad as they claimed, it's bloody outrageous that they parked in this way. But it's not dangerous, and the above example isn't that big of a deal.

How to pass out a parked or stopped car safely-- it's one of the basic things anybody cycling on the road should learn.

So should they have parked on the footpath?? If they had, someone else would have taken a picture put up here and again people would be talking rubbish. They had good reason to park there.

Maybe it was parked there as part of the campaign to make cyclists aware of the constant danger that they're in?

(as referenced in another thread on here somewhere)

This is the answer. It's just the usual bull**** from a Garda.

Isn't there a number for reporting dangerous driving? Maybe ring in the license number to that, or just ring Store St and tell them there's an abandoned car on the bridge, would they kindly send a Garda down to move it.

This morning I passed a garda car obstructing part of a bus lane. A number of taxis had to change lane and drive around it. Can you imagine if they all went down to the nearest station to demand an explanation?

This sort of thing just makes cyclists look like a bunch of inflexible **** with authority issues.

Oh noes, the man is abusing the system. Lets all call Amnesty.

It's pretty visible, if you can't see them in time then you shouldn't be on the road at all.

??? but how would the pedestrians get by then, I mean some would argue the road is clearly wide enough :pac:

Now if the guards were playing Pooh sticks on the bridge with their half eaten baguettes from Centra and running across the road like children to see who'd won the race, then I'd be annoyed with the cars position, otherwise I'd just go around it and get on with life.

Yes - it's the one that was totalled a couple of years ago in Sandyford

It's Matt Talbot Bridge but don't beat yourselves up about it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,700 ✭✭✭brayblue24

If it was legitimate business then tough, I would park where I had to for as long as I had to-but even then I would move it when I got a chance.

If it's a pit stop to the Centra then no it's not on, find another shop for the jumbo breakfast roll. It's like seeing a garda driving while using the mobile. It's wrong and it looks crap-and people do notice. If they didn't this thread and many more like it wouldn't exist.

Naturally I'm biased generally but you have to see the bigger picture too. That said there are some here (no names) hell bent on stereotyping an entire force based on one incident, that I wouldn't even bother entertaining, in line with others here I notice...but not Hail 2 Da Thief's last post, that was just funny;)

That's how to block a cycle lane with your Ferrari.

Now if the guards were playing Pooh sticks on the bridge with their half eaten baguettes.........

they'd never waste the grub:) They might score a couple of extra Mars bars and use those:)

Maybe I'm missing something but why not just cycle around them and why stop to take a photo? I assume they stopped to talk to their colleague - not the best choice of location but given its the city centre you're always going to inconvenience someone wherever you stop.

Btw - what about the cyclist coming behind without the helmet, he could've been killed!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,295 ✭✭✭Joe10000

My dads car broke down and I went to help him push it into the side of the road which then blocked the cycle lane, we put the hazards on and called the AA.

The abuse that was hurled at us for blocking the cycle lane was unreal and completely unjustified, are cyclists on some special medication or something ?

From that day on I have no time for any of them, I used to make sure I left room for them at lights and now I do the opposite.
