If you car was stolen from an NCT centre ...

So I was getting my car tested in NCT centre in Cork today (she passed:) ) After handing over the paperwork and paying, I was directed to go to the waiting area, but to first leave my key in the ignition of my car outside. I laughed and said "Seriously?" And they were. I said "And if someone steals it?" The guy quipped "I hope you can run fast!" So my question is whether the NCT centre would be liable if it were stolen (as unlikely/likely as it may be)? A fair few people were standing out in the rain miserably watching their cars or in them, so obviously thought had crossed their mind too. My car was out there 15 minutes before anyone collected it. So what do you think, an over-reaction or right to have been concerned?

this is common practice in a lot of centres, seems very odd that they can't just hand the keys back with the pass/fail result.

Eh...I just sit in my car until someone is ready to test it and then I head out to the viewing area.

You haven't been in Ballymun (aka Northpoint) testing centre. You leave your key at the desk with ID and you don't get your key back at the end of the test until you furnish your receipt!

Might be something to do with the area :D

I was in nct centre today too. Passed!

When I am going to nct centre I always give keys, always get them back handed to me.

First time I hear about keys in ignition...

In my local NCT centre, you hand the keys over to the tester when you're registering/paying and they hand them back to you when they're giving you your pass/fail paperwork.

What they do is test the car, leave it parked outside with the keys in, call you over, give you the pass cert etc, then send you on your way to the carpark where your car has the key inside.

In Galway you hand keys in at the counter.

Not in the centre where I go to.You give the keys to the tester before the test and they give them back to you with the pass/fail sheet afterwards as others have already said. They never say leave in the ignition:eek:

Same anytime I've done it, must have done about 6 tests at 2 different centres and it's always been keys given before and handed back after. One thing I've noticed is they never lock the doors after the test but with the immobilizer she ain't going anywhere without the key.

OP should report the centre to whoever is in charge of issuing the contracts, this behaviour isn't on.

That's gas... I've had a few cars tested at the Little Island venter over the years too. They always tell you to leave the keys in the car. I don't like it either tbh.

That's been my experience in 2 different centres too.

My experience is handing the keys to the guy and see him drive the car into the centre, and when it's finished he comes in with the keys and hands them back. I will admit i've only done 1 NCT, but leaving the keys in the ignition seems mental to me!
