    Hey all,

I'm a guitarist/Bassist of 5 years but looking to play Bass this time.

My preference would be rock but I don't mind playing metal as long as I'm not confined to one string.

My favorite band would be Muse so I like to experiment with my bass lines and get something that both sounds good and keeps a sublime rhythm to allow the guitarist freedom to explore.

I'm 21 years of age and living in the city center. I'm free 24/7 (unemployed unfortunately) so if anyone is interested, give me a shout.

    Thanks,
    Brendan.

Are you a four string or a five string bassist?

4 string. Never saw the point in investing in a 5 string, the neck ends up being too to wide (without investing in professional equipment.)

To me the fundamental advantage of a 5 string bass is the extended range it offers you. Rather than hitting various notes on the A string you can drop down an octave and hit them on the B string instead and really boom out the bottom end.
Have you ever actually played a 5 string bass? The difference in neck width of my Ibanez K5 versus my Squier Precision is very little. I reckon unless you've got very stubby fingers you won't have problems adjusting.

I don't own a 5 sting but Ive played a few. While the difference in width is minimal, I found it to be just enough to make it uncomfortable for me to play. The advantages to having the extra string are obvious but It dose not suit my needs; I usually play around on the 7th fret on the A string and upwards so the extra string would just be wasted on me.

That's probably more down to your hand-eye coordination having to cope with the extra string than the actual width of the neck and would disappear with practice.

So what happens if you go from a song in normal tuning to one a half or full step down? Do you detune? With a 5 string you wouldn't have to.

What if you wanted to do something as simple as play an octave on the A string 7th fret? Your only option would be to go up. With a 5 string you have the facility to go up to a high B or down to a low B.

I started playing bass on a five string, so to be honest I can't really comment on the complications that can ensue when switching from a four string.
The reason I ask is due to the fact that 50% of the music I'm writing is written on 7-string guitar with a five-string bass to compliment it. I figure it would be easier for a bassist to play along to it with a five-string as opposed to a four string. If the five (or seven) extra notes don't pose an obstacle, I'm sure it wouldn't matter.

Anyways...Brendn, I might contact you on Facebook about this. :)

    Cheers,
    Mick.

I should probably butt out of this thread but co-incidentally the last band I was in was featured a 7-string guitar and a 4-string bass. It does result in interesting tonal combinations when you have the guitar going low and the bass going high e.g.

But as you can see from the above if you're used to matching up the bottom strings of each instrument as a reference you're going to get a bit confused :).
