Garda Gatso Vans

Hi, at this stage have seen many of the Garda Gatso vans out and about on the roads - noticed that the camera seems to be at the window at the back door and the vans are usually facing in the direction of the traffic on the side of the road they are parked...

Was wondering what side of the road they are monitoring and can they only catch you if you are travelling in the same direction as they are facing or can they catch cars going both ways on the road?

There is a camera at the front as well. I actually seen an unmarked one yesterday coming in a dual carriageway. I was right beside it before I realised it was a speed van. There was a small sticker on the side saying "Manned traffic surveillance vehicle". It was a red Iveco.

GoSafe ones can, not sure about the Garda ones

You mean don't break a posted limit?

I can still get caught without actually speeding*

*Speeding is when your going too fast for the various conditions that are presented to you in any unique scenario.

i've always wondered what kind of range do these vans have? How close to them do you have to be to get caught?

Even the fines are marked as "Breaking a speed limit", no mention of speeding or driving dangerously too fast either.

From what ive read they use sonar / radar (whatever it is) to record your speed and can record multiple cars at once in series. They have a big range and you probably will be caught long before you even see the van

Ye sure them vans have a camera on front and rear? Don't see where they could fit one on the front of it based on the size of the one used in rear of van http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86GxDis3Lro

Seen this too on the back roads between Finglas and Blanch.

Wondered if it was operated by the same people as the marked ones.

If it's a 10-KY reg one then yes it's a "GoSafe" one.. I saw it and a marked white one travelling in convoy towards Cavan about 5/6 weeks back.

Both Go Safe and Garda Robot vans can detect speeding offences traveling towards and way from the vans, daytime, night time, rain or fog (fogs hard!)

I have noticed 2 in particular that have been parked in the same place on and off for the past few weeks. I know the area well driving it for over 10 years and know 100% they are not accident black spots at all. These are obviously cash cows!!!!!

The camera in the front over the windscreen is one of the "please don't burn me out I'm recording you, but if you do burn me out the recording goes up with the van" surveillance cameras they have one on the rear too.

The speed camera itself is a big ole beast so you'd see it if it was facing out the front. They can monitor both sides of the road too and most will have you caught before you see them. The system doesn't take your picture til your a bit closer to the van.

All gosafe vans doing speed checks are marked.
Unmarked Gosafe vans can only do survey work.
Garda Gatso vans can be marked or unmarked. I've never seen a marked one...
