iPhone Car Diagnostics Kit

    Hello all,

If you are interested in cars, are a car owner, are looking to buy a car soon, or have had headaches from your car in the past, you may be interested in a smartphone car diagnostics system that is being developed by three student from the BIS masters class in UCC.

The car diagnostics system aims to give peace of mind to both car buyers and owners.

    The product is aimed at:

    a) those who are looking to buy a second-hand car

    and

    b) those who would like to know a little more about what's going on under the bonnet of their current car, without confusing car jargon

For those buying a car, the smartphone application could be plugged into a car that a buyer is interested in and display information such as past faults, current faults, whether the airbags have been deployed (an indication of crash history) and whether the mileage on display on the dashboard is honest.

For those who would like more peace of mind in the normal usage of their vehicle, the app would display information such as past and current faults, whether the 'check engine light' is indicating a major fault, or a minor fault so the vehicle can be safely driven to a mechanic (potentially saving expensive vehicle towing charges), track fuel consumption, send reminders on when a service is due, and display live vehicle data like speed and RPM (revs per minute). It should also provide additional reassurance when dealing with mechanics.

The system will be very easy to use, the user simply plugs a piece of hardware into a standard plug present on virtually all modern cars, and the information is displayed back on the users' smartphone.

Currently, the project is in the design stages, but depending on feedback, further steps may be taken to commercialise the product. So you may be helping some young future Irish entrepreneurs in the making!

We would be very grateful if you would take the time to complete our survey, it should take 3-4 minutes.

ps. We are aware that there are similar products out there, if there weren't there wouldn't be a market for this product. Part of the reason we are doing this is to find out what potential customers would value most, and use this to differentiate the product from existing offerings.
