This is a thread where coaches of any level, wannabe coaches and even those who have no intention of ever being a coach can discuss this side of the game.

If you are currently a coach please tell us about who you train, your experiences and your opinions.

For those you of you interested in becoming a coach, details of the FAI coaching courses are here: http://www.fai.ie/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=85&Itemid=97

The brochure on that page is actually out of date so look at the menu on the left hand side. The first course is "Kickstart 1" and costs €45. It consists of about 8 hours and is great value, I strongly reccomend it.

    I'll start so...:D
I coach the Shankill FC under 11 team at the moment and have completed the kick start 1 & 2. I am in the middle of doing the Youth Cert and all going well will have completed it mid august in time for the new season!

Just from a personal point of view, The quality of the new coaching courses has to be seen to be believed. Very high standard and a refreshing approach to coaching which should help with both player and coach retention in the game.

So...anyone fired up for the new season yet???:D
We will be starting our pre-season training next week and I am looking to step up preparation this week and start planning for the road ahead. I hope to have a 6 week session plan together but I am debating whether to go with twice or three times a week.
The team will be playing U13 but, again, not sure on which league we will opt for. Having been in the DDSL for 7 and 9 a side we moved to SDFL for our first 11 a side year to bed two teams into one at a more managable level.
I'm just looking for soundings from the Boardsie Coaching Community on introducing young kids to the joys of proper pre-season training and maybe a Marvel/DC esque bun fight over which league is best!!:)
    Ta Muchly!

This could be a very good thread.

Can someone explain to me the change in rules regarding the age groups of teams? Will all the age groups just skip a year, ie if you were u8's last year you are u10's this year instead of u9's, u10's go to u12's etc etc???

Just wondering will the team stay the same or will I lose players to a different age group.

Your team will stay the same for the most part. The year jump brings the Irish leagues in line with the other leagues in Europe. The only kids you might have to let go are kids who are already playing up a year. I have one lad on my team who will need to stay back a year, which, for me, is a shame as he was voted player of the year!! Still it would not be fair on him to keep him as his development could suffer as at this age with the difference physically in kids a year older with him being small to start with!
All the age groups skip a year and the DDSL and other leagues are putting temporary measures in place to cater for teams at the transitional age groups so that kids do not lose out.

    So...don't panic!!:D

    cheers

yeah I've a feeling I'll lose one or two players that should stay at a lower age level. Overall though should keep the majority of the players.

Just for anyone else confused about the age groups, for the season coming the rules are:

    U-19 - Born 1993 or after
    U-18 - Born 1994 or after
    U-17 - 1995 and after
    U-16 - 1996 and after
    U-15 - 1997 and after

    and so on...

I always thought it was a bit silly when I was 17 and playing "Under-16" Football.

That's coz the forum hasn't been set up yet?

Maybe bump this thread to remind the powers that be?

I started a FAS/FAI Soccer Course on Monday. We'll be doing our kickstart 1 and 2 badges and we were the players for the guys doing their youth certs yesterday!
