Is this a good bike?

I've decided that I'm gonna start cycling more, I cycle 4km a day 5 days a week to school, and I'll be cycling longer journeys on the weekend.

I have a cheap mountain bike that's doing my head in at the moment, but would the Puch Clubman or the Silvretta Leuchthauf of here :http://dublinbikeman.blogs.ie/ or any other of the racers under 200 quid be a good choice? or is he just making a killer profit off the bikes?

They are really, really old bikes. One or two are nice but they must be 30 years old or more. They would probably be faster than your Mountain bike, but under €200 I don't see anything really sexy. The one's for 250 are just a little to pricey maybe 200 or 220 at a push. I like the Atala though, the Peugeot Record du Monde is nice and the Japanese made Bianchi (the Piaggio) should hold it's value since it's got Bianchi written on it and it's probably got horizontal dropouts on the frame!

Personally I'd hang on till you had around 300 if you could.

Yeah I figured that, but I won't have the cash for anything more modern at the moment.

Another I was looking at is this http://www.donedeal.ie/for-sale/gentsbicycles/2057205

I wouldn't say he's making a "killer" profit off them. There's a thread on here somewhere about people who purchased from him and were quite happy. As mentioned in another thread Halfords are doing half price on Carrera bikes if your budget could stretch to that. Otherwise I'd be quite happy to pay 185 for the Puch townbike he's selling.

Another classic, that's a beauty! But it was never a really high end racer. Things like or at that level that cost about 400 today I reckon. Thing is, a lot of the parts for those bikes are not the same as more modern bikes. Something like that will probably have a worn chain and sprockets. Getting a 5 speed one would be tricky enough. Other stuff like the handle bar stem and forks wouldn't be too bad 'cause they don't really wear out but are still completely different to anything in the shops today.

Personally, I'd give the mountain bike a really good service, pump the tyres up good and hard and keep saving. You might get a few quid for the MTB with a decent service. But that red one on done deal is lovely.

Had it serviced about 3 weeks ago, and a new rear axle put on it, but this time it seems that the crank is going a bit dodgy again. It's been through almost 6 years of daily torture, and even then it was bought second hand

I think I might go and have a look at the dublinbikeman's Puchs, if they're well serviced and in good nick I might make him an offer.

Has anybody had any experience with Rothar in Phibsboro? what are their kinda prices?

Not the Puch, they were crap 25 years ago! I doubt it's gotten any better with age.

Try the Done deal one if it's not too small. Rothar are good they'll take care of you if they can.
