    Hi lads,

Just working in Port au Prince (exPat) and got a Direct TV box and card for the house and I am having trouble receiving CBS,NBC,ABC (the American standard channels) as it says it's searching for a signal.

However, the funny thing is I can get the pay channels like Discovery,History,ESPN etc.

Do I need to reposition the dish to pick it up.

    Cheers,

    Odats

I doubt if anyone here is familiar enough with the US system to be able to give you advice on reception in Port-au-prince (other than looking up Lyngsat and guessing).

You'd be much better off posting the query on a US forum - satelliteguys are usually very helpful.

Just saw your posting and I'm heading to Haiti soon. Wondering if I should bring any satellite equipment or a dish, also how is the TV service and internet capability/ VOIP? Would appreciate any information, suggestions or recommendations?
    Thanks in advance,

Have you talked to your neighbours?

Who installed the dish or was it there when you arrived?

Sounds like the dish needs to be aligned correctly.

    What size is the dish?

    Check this link http://www.satbeams.com/footprints

Tell us how you get on and maybe you can be of help to FabryGL:)

    Thanks in advance,

The satellite tv options are DishNetwork, DirecTV or Canal+Caribes.

For the first two you will need a name and address in US. Usually the landlord sorts this out (most have houses in US) but there is shops in PaP (I'm in PetionVille) that do the dish set top box and card.

Internet quality is pretty expensive and can be slow. We have a 1mb dedicated line business package to run our office from ACN (Digicel) in the house and it is $715 per month at a discount (normally $880pm).

Skype is good and streaming TV shows is grand with a 1mb dedicated line

Best internet is ACN and don't go near Access Haiti or H@inet as it will be little better than dial up.

The dish was already there as the landlord previously had DirecTV in the house and I got a company to install the new box.

Looked up the satellite guys forums and unfortunately I am outside the spotbeam for the Florida local channels. The other channels are bang on so it isn't a dish issue well so they said. The only way around this AFAIK is to get a RV (roadside vehicle) card which you can get ABC etc anywhere over any spotbeam. Most places don't show the local channels only ESPN CNN etc
