MAG Ireland & NTA consultation

    All,

    Posting the following on behalf of MAG Ireland;
    In March the National Transport Authority opened the last phase of the consulataion process on their "Draft Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Area, 2011-2030"

    The strategy contains many proposals which would mitigate against the use of powered two wheelers (mopeds, scooters & motorcycles). MAG Ireland has made a detailed response to the strategy document both to highlighting how & where we think increased use of PTW's can contribute to & support the objectives of the strategy, and to point out what we believe are serious flaws and omissions.

    The MAG Ireland submission has now been published on our web site at;
    http://www.magireland.org/2011/responses/nta-response/

    For those who are not aware of the background to this, the NTA is a quango set up to promote public transport. Essentially it's taken the role & personnel of the old Dublin Transportation Office, but with an extended remit and covering a wider geographical area including Louth, Meath, Wicklow & Kildare.

    The DTO were historically hostile to motorcyclists, at one time branding us as "prone to erratic behaviour" when we asked why our mode of transport was omitted from one of their consultations.

    The latest NTA proposals include more tolls, extensive use of 30kph limits, per-kilometer charges and a good deal more besides. The MAG response runs to 37 pages but is worth a read for the insight it provides on the way in which these quangos think.

    The final draft of the strategy is due to go to the minister for approval in late May or early June.

    Tough reading but it does go to show how out of touch our planners are. Only 1 mention of motorbike in a report on Greater Dublin traffic for the next 20 years!
