Just wondering does anyone know if a standard flush mounted back box is the same depth as a surface mounted back box. Im changing a single socket to a double socket and the eircom box is one side of it and there is a stud the other side so although I can fit the double socket in between there is no room for the little wings to clamp the plasterboard so I was gonna get a flush moutned one and screw it in instead of using the wings.

Isn't the thread for the 3.5 screw on the wings in any case, meaning you can't discard it?
As max says, the metal box is the way to go.

Those metal flush backboxes come in depths of 25, 35 and 47 mm
