From the above article - Irish Dental Association
Members will now have to display a single notice containing their fee structure.

I assume that this can only be a good thing, finally we can compare prices. (Although quality of work is always more important ;) )

Defo a good thing, it has to be noted that many dentist already displayed their fees before this code both online and in the surgery.

I think though the problem for patients is that as you point out one dentists filling may be better than another dentists and also patient often don't know what they need or the intricacies of treatment. Ringing around will often lead to lowballing and takes no consideration for quality, service or time spent.

    For instance:
Dentist 1 has a posted examination fee of 30 euro...happy days but each X-ray is 20 euro. So a proper examination might involve 90 euros of exam and X-rays. Do you say I don't want those expensive X-rays? If you do have you had a proper examination?
Dentist 2 has a examination fee of 70 euro but that includes all X-rays....which is better value, dentist 2 will certainly take more X-rays and hence a better examination because there not worried of asking you for more money than agreed for the examination?
Dentist 3 may have a posted examination fee of 140 euro which might seems very expensive but that includes a cleaning, all X-rays and the examination. This may in fact be better value than dentist 1 with the 30 euro examination fee, for the same quanta of treatment.

Dental treatment is complex and not a grocery list to pick items off as you might like. Also its has been show in many studies that patients that change dentist frequently end up with more fillings than those that stay with the one dentist over the years. This is because a dentist that knows your teeth will know if disease is progressing and your history. A new dentist will not trust any filling they did not do themselves and every mark or shadow on your teeth will be eyed with suspicion.
