Does anyone have any details about Gunnar Nelson and when/where we might see him fight again? I haven't heard anything about him for ages and it's over 6 months since his last fight which seems to be his longest ever break between fights. I know that he fought trained in Ireland for a while. Perhaps he's injured?

I'm sure John or someone more in the know will answer but I seem to recall hearing he was concentrating on grappling. Could be wrong though (most likely am!)

I believe Richy is correct, I think he's not focusing on competition really at the moment, more chilling and having fun (with grappling) as far as I have heard. He has all the time in the world and will be a big star.

Yeah that sounds about right. He wants to just relax and improve his skills before hitting the big time, which he invariably will.

Ok. I agree that he has the potential to be incredible. I have never seen somebody so relaxed in the cage as he was against Fadiora.

    Any further information/updates on this?

    2. Jorge Britto. Portugal
    3. Vagner Rocha. USA
    4. Davis Hart. Australia
    5. Gomi Takanori. Japan
    6. Enricco Coco. USA
    7. Murilo Santana. Brazil
    8. Daniel Strauss. U.K
    9. Leo Viera. Brazil
    10. JT Torres. USA
    11. Kron Gracie. Brazil

Another great reason to head to nottingham, he could do well in that field if he avoided some of the heavy weights in the draw, but marcelo has to be the favourite

I might have a crack at that. When's it on? Entry fee etc.?

you can keep up with all things gunni related here http://nelson.is/

after his last fight he had intended on taking a year out to train without the pressure of competition, a time to improve on his game. however the invite to compete in ADCC in his natural weight class (last time he was in -88) came along so he of course jumped at the chance.
i doubt he'll be back in the cage until 2012.

Nelson is expected to face Omari Akhmedov on March 8, 2014 at UFC Fight Night 37.

Any thoughts on this match-up? Seems like a really tough one to me.

Tricky but totally winnable, just looked up Omari's record, sure he's won his last 9 in the first round but what has been the quality of the opposition, we all know how these pesky russians operate ;)

Interesting match up and will be a tough one for Gunni but I honestly think he has all the attributes to be a future champ... as long as he keeps his hands up!

Definitely a tough come back fight after a injury. Although we may not know his opponents, it does not mean they were not decent. So there is an element of unknown and the sky could be the limit for his opponent. The SAMBO fighters typically have adapted very well to the octagon.

He is coming down in weight too (I know thats not always a good thing) and Gunnar isnt the biggest WW. Saying that, I hope and think he will win, but its definitely a tough comeback.

He's training down in sbg at the moment

Omari Akhmedov is bit of an unknown quantity as Gunnar is. I don't think Gunnar has fought a higher calibre of opponent then Omari. It's a really interesting match up because both/one of these can really go far in the division. It's very difficult to bet against Gunnar because he has so much talent.

He walks around 175 I'm almost sure (see his fight vs Santiago, catch weight, 175 vs 183). My brother's training at SBG all week and says Gunnar is barely the 5 11 his stats suggest (more like just over 5 10) and Conor in all probability walks around near the same weight.

He'd do well to be fighting at 155, he wouldn't want to be wrestling someone at this level who's 15 plus pounds bigger than him on fight night (190 plus).

Yeah I agree. Iv seen an interview where he says he trains a mid tempo all year along. As opposed to doing "camps" and cutting heavily. He is ultra talented though.

Your brother must have a Terminator style heads-up display vision if he can tell the difference between 5 11 (which just has to be north of 5 10.5) and just over 5 10! :-)

Haha. Well he knows I'm almost 5 11 and his exact words were "there's no way he's taller than you". :)

I'm 5'11" and I'd say he's about my height. (trained with him in portugal. Hoping he's still in SBG when my knee heals up)

Some people look smaller than they are. I have been told on countless occasions that I am not 6 foot. Its only when I stand right beside them that they realise I am.
