Trailers made from cars

Another post here shows a delorean with a trailer that looks like the front of another delorean (hopefully it was made with spare parts – as opposed to lopping the front off another example of the mark !!)

But it got me thinking about the old days. Remember when people made trailers with the back of panel vans. I remember Mk 1&2 escorts and Renault fours in particular, has anybody got any photographs of these conversions or any interesting car based trailers ??

I assume the reason we don’t see similar conversions nowadays based on say caddies/Incas or berlingos is EU hi-vis health and safety???

They are actually made from new, I thought they were butchered vans at first.

On the subject my old man cut the front axle from a perfectly sound Heinkel Bubble car to be used on a trailer in the early 70's. I never forgave him for that.

In the 70's and early 80's you could trip over Renault L van trailer converts around the country. popular with farmers..

Involves a lot more butchering than you'd like, but there are lots of Mini trailers

I'd love to cut a rusty MK1 Toyota MR2 in half to make a trailer to tow behing my MK1 MR2. Someday maybe:). Probably a good bit of work involved.

In the 70s a few Heinkels were butchered and converted into greyhound trailers!

Saw this German registered trailer/camping device in Mannix Point campsite in Caherciveen over the June Bank holiday weekend. Looked very well made with an official looking stamped plate on it. It slept 2 people. Guess it was pretty cosy !.

im not sure if all German trailers need a TÜV (NCT,MOT equivelant), but everything over a certain size does, not sure where the line is drawn but this I guess is way over it

Yes, all trailers need a TUV/NCT in Germany, even if they are self made. They also need an identification plaque as pictured in the blue one and they get their own seperate registration number, plate and log book. They are checked properly at first registration if they are home made.

I've done a few trailers from crashed or worn out cars, I once cut the front off a crashed 70's Beetle and modified the interior to fit two matresses and some storage space. It didnt pass the TUV at first because the tow coupling of the Beetle trailer was pushing more than 75kg onto the tow bar of the car, it had to be modified and it passed. They also weighed the trailer, (I think it was 340 kg empty), and wrote in the papers that it had a max payload of 410 kg and put a max speed of 80 kmh on it. Bit over the top you might think but proper order when you see some of the home made yokes that go around in other countries.

Btw I had to "trailer the trailer" to the TUV centre to get all this done, they would screw you big time if they caught you pulling one with no registration. No excuses. :o

a very interesting thread,i thought i was the only one who had lost the plot ?
anyway this is what i intend making into a trailor ,when and if i get the time and enthusiasm to do it.

and this is what i will pull it with.

I think.........FCUK Yeah go for it!!! I'll even lend you a hacksaw!

I presume you're cutting the bonnet off, and leaving the rest? You could make a sleeper trailer out of it, should easily be 2m+ on the interior when youre done. I'd even consider using the boot lid as a kind of 'pop top' for more head room when sleeping, put some material around the edges a bit like a VW camper and Bobs yer uncle.

Suppose no-one has a pic of a trailer made from a Toyota MR2. I'm interested to see how the front is done.

was thinking more along the lines of cutting at the rear pillar,no point in leaving the rest, you couldn't fit anything in it.
i think i will need more than a hacksaw though.

Problem with car based trailers is that they can be very nose heavy when made out of estates and vans like escort vans Even the likes of the mk1 cortina trailer in the pictures there would probably not be very nice to tow. Particularly if your can was any bit low or has suspension that doesnt take to trailers very well.
I traded some stuff for a escort mk4 based trailer once and it was really horrible if you put anything remotely heavy in the front due to being too long for a single axle.

I actually kind of cringe when i see mini based trailers actaully, it's odd i know but anyone i've come across who has them tends to be annoying, something about the mentality of the people, they always tend to bring a million campchairs, parasols and dogs to shows also. I just sort of feel like runnign away from them before i get bored to death.
