Not the one many were expecting but still a fantastic achievement. Ed Whitlock finished the marathon today in 3.25.40. Whats special about this is the fact the man is 80:eek:!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Really does prove age is only a number and something that can be conquered. Here is a list of his world records since he has reached 70 pretty jaw dropping

    Distance Age Group Time
    Mile: Men 75-79 5:41.80
    3000m Men 75-79 11:10.43
    5000m Men 70-74 18:33.38
    5000m Men 75-79 19:07.02
    10000m Men 70-74 38:04.13
    10000m Men 75-79 39:25.16
    Indoor - Track
    Distance Age Group Time
    1500m Men 75-79 5:20.04
    3000m Men 65-69 10:11.60
    3000m Men 70-74 10:52.40
    3000m Men 75-79 11:17.21

    Outdoor - Road
    Distance Age Group Time

Staggering numbers. He defies the ageing process somehow. Most of us will be lucky to be walking with a stick when we reach 80

Most people would be happy with those times at a quarter of his age, pretty impressive.

Speaking of world records, see this article that has appeared on aunties news page about when/ if we might be getting closer to 2hrs:

I was listening to an interview with him on the latest episode of MarathonTalk yesterday, amazing guy. I laughed when he described sub-3 as a 'soft' target for a 70 year old :)

His training regime is very straight forward, he runs 3 hours every day on a loop near his house at an easy pace & does a few short weekend races for speed.

Does anyone know if he has been running all his life or started at a later age?

Ok I listened to Marathon talk and found out for myself

"Most people would be happy with those times at a quarter of his age, pretty impressive."

id be delighted with his times and im just over a third of his age ... dont know if its inspiring or depressing

we have a 79 or 80 year old guy that runs in most of the local races here ( mayo ) and he amazes me , that he can run at all, but to be able to run at that kind of speed at that age is unreal..
the next time im groaning going down the stairs and puffing and panting on a run im gonna think of an 80 year old running faster than me at every distance and harden the f*** up

so i guess its inspiring then
