    hi guys,

got a 3yr old cow with a hoof crack on outside rear claw, she is lame enough with it

crack is at the rear of the claw must be 12mm deep up high and in the white line region I believe from reading on the net

as the inside part of the claw is fine I am going to put on a shoe on that part

what type of shoes do you all use?

I tried a timber one this evening unfortunately glue was out of date and as soon as she put her foot on the ground shoe fell off

should the claw material below the crack be removed or the crack enlarged to say ~10mm wide or just left alone. I don't think it is going to bond to the new growth, or is there any hope of this claw recovering?

hope this girl won't be a cull cow come the end of the year

We would always have a hoofcare operator do a job like this for us. I've seen loads of DIY jobs where the cow never recovered - no offence - you might have a lot of experience for all I know. But for the sake of €30 we'd always get the hoofcare operator.

He would normally pare the cracked piece down as far as he could and then put on a rubber shoe on the good side in order to keep the bad side off the ground.

I never saw a timber shoe being used - I don't think it would be very flexible and it certainly wouldn't move with the hoof. What type of glue would you use to glue on a shoe?? I've only ever seen shoes being nailed on (similar nails to horse shoe nails)

    Hope she makes a recovery.

Over here they have a type of shoe called a shoof and it gets glued on but it's not something I've come across at home.

The wooden ones used to be very commonly used . I haven't seen them for a while. They were glued on with an epoxy resin & very successful.

Still on the go in Oz I see
