    All dogs do it.

If a pup he may be just playing but i think dogs who have gut ache eat grass to make themselves sick to get rid of the gut ache.

Either that or you really bought a sheep http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheep

    Dogs http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dogs

    :)

it means you need to buy a bag of nuts for them, just joking i have 2 springers and let them out every day for an hour and go straight for the grass, just dosed them again a few weeks ago for worms but they have always done this and they were 3 years old in november, some say its worms and some say they need something thats in the grass.

It means the dog has a serious identity crisis and actually thinks its a cow - its quite a common ailment in young pups :)

Its called "Puppo-bovine-identicus Syndrome" , the only known cure is a high dose of dog nuts and a tail massage every 4 hours for the pup for 8 weeks.

i've been told that it helps their digestive system - notice how they'll only go for a certain type of a grass time and time again.

Agreed, had a springer for 13 years and he did it. Every time we took him to the vet he was fine !

Wife wasnt impressed when I informed her the lunch made the dog sick:D Maybe should have reworded it better.:o

One of ours does that - I think she finds feed in the dung that has passed through the system. Another dog we had used to like to carry sheep dung around in his mouth but didn't eat it. Couldn't really work that one out! Some dogs like the bits of cut off hoof that the farrier scatters when shoeing. Again, couldn't work that one out!

I was told that they do it if they have an upset stomach to puke. And my collie did this. Then a vet told me, simply, 'they do it because they want to, thats all'.

ate theres this one shuck he always hunts and its bang in the middle of it is were he eats the grass, i dossed him the day incase it was worms.
He never vomits so it couldn't be something wrong with him.
if he was thirsty he would drink from the shuck as its always full of of water and theres other we streasm were he would drink out of if he needed water. It doesnt stop his hunting (he is an incredibly hard going dog) but it was just a wee novelty i wanted to know if it happens any other dogs :P

Didnt have to, Mother Nature gave them the tools. Purely natural happening.

I was at a family funeral yesterday and asked this very question ( I have 2 cousins that are vets)
My pup has a tendancy to eat a bit of grass but he is much fonder of furniture, paper carpets etc.
Anyway, one vet said that a pup eating grass was probably down to worms but both agreed that in an adult dog it was probably an upset stomach.
    Nothing serious in any case.

Hello Vizzy,Seeing a dog scrape it's bum on the ground is usually a more definite sign they have worms.

    John,
Yeah knew that as well but the pup hasn't done this at all.(BTW,even after worming him there was no sign of worms and he still eats a bit of grass from time to time)

my lab used to do this as a ritual first thing in the morning he'd eat loads of grass and then throw it up, definately unpurpose, just cleaning out his stomach for the new day. never did him any harm.
