Car advice needed - Which to buy?

    Hello all,

I’m in the process of getting a new (2nd Hand) car. I got loan approval for up to €12,000 but I don’t really want to spend more than €10,000. I have been looking on carzone just to see what would be available in the price range and have come up with a list of models (2008 Reg onwards, saloons, 1.3-2l) that I think would suit my needs. I don’t put a huge amount of miles on the car so the main factors I'm looking for would be reliability, safety and efficiency more than anything else.

With that in mind, which of the following do you think would be best value?

    Ford Focus/Mondeo
    Mazda 6
    Peugeot 407
    Nissan Primera
    Toyota Avensis
    Volkswagen Passat

    Any thought swould be appreciated.

    Cheers,
    H

Absolutely has to be the passat, for that dosh you would pick up the 07/08 model. Looks great, very economical, lovely car to drive. Second would be the Mazda 6

Primera and 407 would be at the bottom of the pile.

The garage i traded my 08 skoda octavia 1.4 16 vlv full spec last july let it go in sept for 9.5k

It was a lovely car. Nice drive. A little sluggish on the overtake but economical..

Oh and it has a big boot.:P

Out of that list the Mondeo and 6 would be the ones to go for imo. Both the best driver's car in their class, practical and reliable.

Just to add another to the list, how about the Volvo S40? It's smaller than the others as it is based on the Focus but they are well finished, nice to drive and a bit classier than the main stream models:

Outside of your budget but you get the idea.

If you don't do much mileage like you mentioned, why not consider a 2 ltr petrol Accord? You might get an 07 or a even an 08 for that sort of money. I went up to Derry and back on my 05 Accord this weekend, and I thoroughly enjoyed the drive (However at one stage there were 2 other Accords behind me, never seen this many Accords together other than at the Honda showroom! :D

PS: And earlier today, trying to overtake an erratic driver on the N2, I didn't realise the car had gone to 140-160 from 90-100 just like that. I don't normally go like that, I was just trying to overtake a dodgey driver before the overtaking lane ends)
