Approaching a pub about promoting me?

    Hey all,

Not sure where I should put this thread, but I reckon this forum is probably the best place for it? At a bit of a loss as it's a very generic question and there's no pub/club forum to be seen.

    Anyway,

At the moment, I do "social" photographs for a local printed media. This involves attending a few of the pubs in the town each week, taking photos of people celebrating their birthdays or retirements or whatever, or just photos of people generally 'out on the town'. The photos are used in a printed form regularly distributed to the town (intentionally not giving names for what should be obvious reasons :) )

Anyway, one of the venues I attend has large TVs in the main area, which can be seen by a lot of people. The TVs are generally playing random shite, usually a Sky music station or such (so there'd be music videos on them, but no audio is ever played from the TVs, as the venue have their own DJ or band or whatever in depending on the night).

Anyway, my bright idea is to try to convince them to play a slideshow of my images on these screens, with my website URL or such watermarked onto the screen, to be seen by all.

However, I've no money to pay for this sorta advertising, and they don't have advertisements on the screens already, so chances are they either never thought of it, or are against it.

So we'll assume for arguments sake that they aren't completely against the idea.

My issue is somehow turning this into making it look like them advertising my photography is somehow me doing them a favour! :D

So I was thinking, the obvious idea is to barter my photography ability. Offer to do some interior shots for them, a shot of their building, maybe a few shots of the food or drink they serve, etc. etc. but chances are, as they're quite busy and established at this point, that they really don't need such photographs.

My other, less redundant idea, was to try and convince them it's good for their business (a long shot, but worth a chance!). I have taken many photographs in their venue over the last few months. I've got them on my hard drive. In all their glorious detail. If I were to put a fair few of these images onto my slideshow (making it 70% people in this venue, 30% landscape/etc.), and update the slideshow every week to include the previous week's images, i could try the angle that "well if i take someone's photograph in your venue, that person will return the following weekend, to see themselves on the screen".

One thing I have noticed is that people do love photographs of themselves.

So I was wondering what ye guys here thought of my ideas? If I sent a letter to management outlining the above, would they ring me up just so they could laugh at me over the phone, or do you reckon they'd be at all interested in this?

To my naive little brain, it seems like a win-win for everyone involved, but that said, I've no knowledge of how pubs/restaurants etc work like this, so I just thought I'd throw it out there.

    Cheers :)

I hate being negative KKv but this idea would have been great around 10-15 years ago.

Media has moved on and slideshows on their own add little value to advertising in a pub.
People want to see moving images.
Pubs depend on local trade and there would be no need for them to advertise in their own venue unless you incorporate something else into it.

My advice to give something constructive to your idea is this.

Invest in a good DVD Slideshow/Menu creator like Adobe Encore and design slides that have:
    - Your photoa
    - an advertisement
    - Menu/Weekly-Monthly Entertainment List/Town News Bulletin.

Approach the Town Committee and get their support in advertising the Town news and then you have something to approach the pub(s) with.

Well y'see, with the idea im proposing (photos of people), despite the amazing leaps forward in technology, there's not really a whole lot outside of a slideshow that fits the bill (that I can think of).

I know a few people studying graphic design and such, so i could make it look fancy but at the end of the day the principle of a slideshow doesn't really change :/

Not sure i'd fancy approaching the town committees or such as it seems like it'd turn into a drawn out procedure, require a lot of effort and time, and wouldn't really help me too much I don't think. I'd like to try deal directly and solely with the venue. Of course the slide could include advertising upcoming or current deals for their restaurant, bar, etc. my end goal is just to get my name on their screen for all to see, if you see where im coming from.

Am I setting myself up for failure?
