We have a pedigree show calf on a fresian cow. Its around 5 months old. It was in great form up till yesterday. We let it out yesterday and brought it in yesterday evening for the first time. It stopped sucking the cow yesterday and we cant get it to suck. its in good enough form, its still eating meal, hay and silage. its also drinking water but i cant get it to suck any. The calf usually keeps the
cow sucked out dry. her bag is now hard. any ideas on how to get it sucking again. theres no sign of a draw and its eye is ok.
    Thanks

were still trying to get this calf sucking, its as if you'd be trying to feed it poison. Spent over an hour 2day trying to get it sucking. id say the cow gave it a kick. any other ideas on how to tempt the calf to suck, The vet checked it 2day and said its not sick, what should i do?
    Thanks

years ago when we where at a show there was an old farmer there who said as the calf gets older the cows milk goes salty and the calf doesnt like it anymore , maybe this is the case... dont think you can force it to drink

keep it inside and away from the mother overnight to make it thirsty/hungry.

reintroduce it to the mother and if it shows no inclination to suck then separate again

2cc of mederantil given into the muscle should get him sucking again.

Cow might have mastitis - calf wont suck if she has. Would make sense in that the calf is perfectly health and has normal appetite and will drink water. Have seen this happen a few times and its often mastitis, especially when you mention that her udder is hard.
