Have finally got rid of sky+ and looking to get as close a system to Sky Plus as possible. Should I get FTA PVR along with a DTT/Saorview receiver or go for one of the combos? Any recommendations please.

A combo is convenient in that all the channels are in one box, but the PVR functionality is a long way from Sky+. Most have only a single satellite tuner, so if your recording a sat channel, you can't watch another, (apart from maybe one or two on the same transponder). Also, theres no 7 day epg, so scheduling recordings is inconvenient. And no series link.

The closest system would be a Freesat+ box for UK channels, and a Saorview box for Irish channels. 7 day guide on both, series link on Freesat, maybe on Saorview in the future, total of 3 tuners (2 sat+ 1 DTT) so no conflicts with scheduling recordings etc.

The only other option would be something like the vu+ duo, a Linux based receiver. This can have all the channels in one, but takes quite a bit of setting up, and needs an internet connection to download EPG for UK channels, and is relatively expensive (~€500 all in). Also, like the combo, retuning of channels is periodically necessary as channels change frequency.

So, for an easy life, I'd recommend Freesat+ and Saorview.

Is there a decent receiver-only (i.e. no PVR) HD combo you'd recommend?

All the combos have PVR functionality, but you have to add an external USB drive on the cheaper ones.
The only one I have direct experience of is the Ferguson Ariva HD Combo, but that particular model has been discontinued. They have a new one, Ariva 200 Combo, which seems to be decent enough for the price. Check out the last few pages of the thread in Foreign Satellite for some opinions.
