Orangeman David Scott receives Catholic school award

"A Catholic school in north Belfast has given a cross-community award to an Orange Order education officer who regularly visits to speak to pupils.

St Patrick's Bearnageeha makes the award in memory of a former teacher, Terry Donaghy, who died two years ago.

It is being presented to David Scott on Thursday by the former Irish prime minister, Bertie Ahern.

Mr Scott said the Orange Institution was "greatly honoured" to have received the award from the school.

    Better understanding

"To be the first to receive this award is an indication of the efforts of the education programme," he added.

"I talk to schools and organisations from all sections of the community and try to give them a better understanding of the Order.

"The pupils at St. Patrick's have always shown great interest in our tradition. They listen intently and they ask some very tough questions, which I am happy to answer.

"If we are to have a shared future then we need to understand each others' history, culture and traditions."

Terry Donaghy was a teacher of English and RE in the school in the 1970s but later left the profession to become a successful solicitor.

He also became known for his efforts to promote peace and reconciliation, going to Mass on a Saturday evening and then visiting different Protestant churches on Sunday mornings.

He died outside Belfast City Hall while attending a march for peace in the Middle East.

His son Leo said he would have been proud to have his name associated with the event on Thursday.

    Reconciliation

"He always was one for reaching out to others and breaking new ground," he said.

"We know he would really approve of this event, because it promotes peace and reconciliation."

The event was part of the annual cross-community breakfast in the school.

Headteacher PJ O'Grady said Mr Scott's visits to the school had helped pupils, including many from the Crumlin Road and Ardoyne areas to learn more about the Orange Order and its traditions."

"There may be some raised eyebrows that David Scott is the recipient of this award," Mr O'Grady said.

"However, in the spirit of what Terry Donaghy was about, there should be no surprises.

"When it came to the quest for reconciliation, Terry believed in pushing the boat out. We in Bearnageeha endeavour to do likewise."

Annoying as it is for alot of republicans, most members of the orange order are Normal people. Alot of things happen behind the scenes that never reach the news to improve relations with thier neighbours and promote understanding about it's culture

What "culture" ? Your culture revolves around your belief that you are better in every way over Catholics and your members have stood hand in hand with despicable loyalist terrorists who have murdered many innocent people.

You can shove your "culture" where the sun don't shine, the vast majority of people in both Ireland and the UK couldn't give a crap about your extremist right wing sectarian nutjob "culture".

I don't see how people who like to dress up like Steed out of the Avengers and hold 2,000 marches from April to November to celebrate the victory of a gay Dutch mercenary over an English king supported by the Pope as normal.

I hope that some day, we will live on an island where religion is a thing of the past and no longer defines and constrains a person's identity and destiny.

Republicans and Orangemen alike are throwbacks to Civil War politics that the country badly needs to consign to the past.

Of course members of the OO are "normal people", and I'm glad that David Scott is visiting a Catholic school.

I have already articulated how I feel about RC schools on another post, but in order to really progress and reconcile, how about abandoning divisive and backward religious beliefs, not indoctrinating future generations with them, and treating each other like human beings?

The Orange Order existed long before the Civil War in 1922.

As did the RCC, but both are contributing factors in division, so long as they continue to promote sectarianism.

Well I'm certainly no fan of the RCC, but I don't know how Catholics - and I'm not one - are supposed to warm themselves to an organistaion where members make speeches like calling the Pope " anti Christ and the harlot of Rome " and calling for the RAF to carpet bomb nationalist towns and villages in the north and the border.

I'm not asking for anyone to warm themselves to them. What I'm saying is that the next generation does not need to be indoctrinated with nonsense.

I don't have a religion, i still hate the RCC and i am still a loyalist.

Since you did not provide a link, I can only assume we are reading this article because it appeared in the news?

Fair play to the Catholic School for having an open mind and trying to have a better community. To have the decency to award an award where its due.

Now thats one half sorted, lets try to get the other half thinking the same way instead of trying to boast and big themselves up.

it's crazy how the OP is taking something positive and trying to turn it negative. is it not good news? what am I missing here?

Nevermind all this my side/your side rubbish.

What the HELL is Bertie Ahern doing presenting an award to anyone?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,165 ✭✭✭Savage Tyrant

The Orange Order is a sectarian triumphalist organisation. It is by it's very nature full of hate and bigotry. No amount of ditty awards from a catholic school or otherwise can detract from that fact.
The very fact that it is newsworthy that the Orange Order won't be "taking action" against two of it's members for attending the funeral mass of a dead catholic policeman says it all really.

Winning an award from a Catholic school still does not defer from the fact,

    Catholics cannot join
    Members cannot marry Catholics
They believe in and promote Protestant supremacy

This thread, in itself, is an award-winning example of cross-community co-operation. Together you have created a magnificent set of trenches, and a splendid little trainwreck.

I'm busy right now, so I'll be back with awards a little later. There will be an award for nearly everyone, I think, although the exact duration of awards will vary.

[EDIT]Ah well, only three winners of the week away from Politics.[/EDIT]

    moderately,
    Scofflaw
