Beaumont Hospital

I was playing football the other night, when my leg gave way from under me. I've been playing soccer a long time, and knew straight away it was serious. I gave it a couple of days rest before I went anywhere, just incase it wasn't as bad as I feared. When it didn't improve I went to A and E in Beaumont, to get it looked at. In fairness to them I was in and out in about an hour.

My problem is though, the girl the looked at me, told me there was nothing wrong, ligaments, tendons and cartilage all in good shape. I wasn't very confident in this diagnosis, I know my body, I knew something wasn't right. She was adamant I was fine. For a second opionin, I went to see a Physio. After a far more in depth check up, the physio quickly determined I had torn my cartilage.

Can anyone advise me, do I have any basis to complain about the beaumont. They are charging me 100 euro for a diagnosis that is wrong. I have no private health care, so will have to go public. Can beaumont now refer me to a specialist based on the Physios report, The main reason I went to AndE before the physio was to get this referal.

    Any advice appreciated!

Every hospital has a complaints department. If you feel you were treated inappropriately, you can, of course, make a complaint. You may not have been treated inappropriately though.

What you have here - is two different opinions. You have chosen to accept the Physios as the correct one. I assume this was based on clinical examination as opposed to any objective testing. In the A&E, you probably had an Xray, the goal of which would have been to out-rule a fracture. So the doctor would have advised you based on objective tests at that time and their clinical exam. Some types of injury evolve over time. While you may have 'cartilage damage', this is difficult to determine without some more investigation - so as such you have an unclear diagnosis.

An A&E department can refer you to an OPD clinic - if you are not happy with your experience there - you might be better talking to your GP. He/She can make the referral and follow-up on it for you. If it is more urgent, they can be your advocate to the relevant specialist. Alternatively, most A&E departments have a review clinic where they see this kind of thing - you could ask about that
